They've actually replicated the Milgram Experiment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment).

1. Yeah, the description of the gameshow seems right
out of a textbook. Yawn.

8. I think that "yawn" stands on it's own merits.
Maybe if I was not familiar with the earlier study, this would be more interesting to me. Or, if this was a study done the first time. I haven't watched further, but it almost seems like they are pretending that they came up with this idea and not a re-hash of an older study.

9. This should interest you
because this shows that the frightening statistics of the earlier study (60%) has risen to 80 when you add the pressure of television. This says something about us as human beings and explains a lot of behaviour, including the behaviour we see during mass political violence and genocide. Because a vast majority of ordinary people are capable of inflicting violence on another human being simply by being told.

10. I think it rose from 60% to 80% because the guy was French
I know I would play. :)

5. End of the road
I think this proves that television programming is hitting a brick wall.

4. This is problematic in a number of ways..
Edited on Thu Mar-18-10 11:08 AM by Lars77
Mainly, it shows that in the setting of a TV show even more people are capable of seriously injuring or killing another human being. The TV show had 82% of people willing to do this, Milgram only had about 60.

More from the BBC.

For people researching genocide, material like this proves why political mass violence can happen for example. It also shows that the results of the psychological tests of war criminals are correct. They ususlly shows that people who have actively partaken in genocide and mass murder are perfectly normal people and therefore part of our moral universe.

In other words, we are confronted with truth that we are very much likely to be one of them if we were put in that kind of situation.

6. nothing new
There's an old black and white video showing the same thing. Because a person is told to do it. Even though it isn't real.

Can't find it on some public domain sites, but he'd hit each button with some guy on the other side of this gizmo screaming. But he was told to keep doing it.

7. Was also in a Yves Montand movie
Edited on Thu Mar-18-10 12:57 PM by AzNick
I remember watching it when I was 10.

Forgot the title. Yves Montand was in it.

It was also loosely based on JFK's assassination.
