Also, a shout out for UCSF, my alma mater. Way to do, Dr. Weitz. This is such an important issue, and the "Democrats" have given it up to the theocrats.

1. why is it that someone who holds a different opinion is "a dope"
that is just so juvenile.

This dissention in the party will never be healed.

He is on the "right" side of several issues (regulation of financial orgs, expanded hate-crime legislation) and most importantly he voted against IWR.

a "dope"?

2. Gee, sometimes it isn't possible to squeeze a completely nuanced
argument into the title line. On the other hand, Stupak is arguing against something which doesn't exist, re-opening old pro- and anti-abortion wounds, and lying to further his national profile.

So, maybe dope isn't strong enough. How about a mendacious, evil, opportunistic con-man, who uses divide-and-conquer tactics on his own party about a fictitious "problem", and who tries to make his political chops on the backs and misery of (mostly) poor women?

3. I should also add that he lived in a subsidized brothel owned by theocrats
for years. So, you are right, he's no dope.

5. Why not invite some medical experts to discuss the many situations
in which an abortion is a medical necessity? I'm thinking of tubal pregnancies, pregnancies in women too ill to carry a baby safely to term, and many other situations. Why don't we ever hear about these matters? Is the topic taboo?

Yes. Many abortions are elective -- due to serious problems in the development of the fetus or the mother's sense that she will not be able to provide for the child or rape or incest. But why don't we hear about the many instances in which abortion is not a choice but really is performed due to medical concerns?

The women I have known who told me they had or were having abortions either had a medical necessity like a tubal pregnancy (and did not think of the procedure as an abortion, I suspect), were either very young and unable to provide for a child or over 50 and, again, afraid they could not provide for the child.

I think that, in fact, the number of women who have abortions for the sake of convenience is extremely small. Am I wrong? Is it a question of social milieu?
