Pop quiz! When did Barack Obama say these things to an arena full of people?

"In just a few days a century-long struggle will culminate in a historic vote."
"We are two days away from changing America."

Hard to tell what's from the 2008 presidential campaign and what's from today's health care rally, isn't it? Obama this morning said the House health care reform vote Sunday is "historic" and cited the fight of presidents past to get health care done.

"Make some phone calls and knock on some doors! We are going to make history," Obama said at what could be his last presidential rally before Congress votes to send final health care reform legislation to his desk.

I spent nearly two years on the road with Obama (and the rest of the 2008 candidates) and today's rally at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia made me feel as if I'd jumped in the Hot Tub Time Machine. I was practically waiting for Obama to offer his most prized stump line from fall 2008, which went something like this in Jacksonville, or Las Vegas, or Evansville, Indiana: "We are less than two days away from bringing about change in America."

11. Half a loaf would be a public option/Medicare-Buy-In (Single Payer a full loaf).
We're talking crumbs here.

6. And millions more of us will not be taken care of by this bill and will have have to continue to sit
at the back of the bus without affordable health care.

10. No this site is riddled with
Independent thinkers who will not march in lock step unlike Repubes.

Now to your point, Dr. Dean, Grayson, Krugman and DK have all bought in to this notion that doing nothing is worse then at least getting a blue print that has the potential to lead us in the right direction and I agree with that point.

However, the amount of political capital that this has cost Obama and Democrats is not worth what they are getting. If you would take off your DLC provided Pollyanna glasses you will see that the Republicans are going to beat the crap out of Democrats over this and use the various wedge issues built in to this particular legislation as well as the process that got us to this legislation to stir the masses into a revolt there is not enough meat right off the top to make this saleable to vast majority of Americans there is a great notion that none will be dropped for pre-existing conditions but that only works for people that have had the experience and that is a small sliver of the population not enough to turn the tide. The worse parts of this legislation to be exploited by repukes is the notion that the Federal Government will be mandating that PEOPLE purchase insurance directly from the insurance industry (WHAT?) that is a repuke wet dream come true but they are going to use the economic impact of that on the young and healty to expolit it against Democrats.

Bottom line come NOV we will lose the House and Senate and the Repukes will continue to bash Democrats over the head with this failed reform bill even as they the Repukes triumph in its fundamental success. The steps required to truly transform this into a single payer plan will never, never, never get implemented so you see all those like Dr. Dean, DK, etc that bought the vision will see it shattered in the end and any that fail to see the intensity building will just be blindsided.

The true path if we were going to pay such a huge political price would have been to start with the transformative government run single payer and scale back from there but always showing the American people what the intention was from the start that way the Democrats could have come back later and used that ideal to gain support against anything the repukes had planned to do.

One last chance KILL THE BILL, start over and hang the Repukes with their own noose.

12. the part of this logic that doesn't work the most is presuming
that killing the bill would not be and even worse setback to the Democratic party for years to come.

But I am not going on the politics of the thing. Mostly I just think the bill is a good first step, the best possible in our messed up political system, and this victory can lead to fully implemented universal health care of some kind.
