4. Some things are better left unsaid...especially if they're said by Reverend Al.
But just like Sarah Palin, stick a microphone in his face and turn on the camera and there is NO WAY in Heaven or Hell that this man is going to STFU. No WAY.

6. He looks he's losing weight...maybe he's on medication or something.
...but that is not an excuse either for him to show up on Foux News with such chuff remarks.

8. I think the fox guy threw him off, put words in his mouth..
..besides, we have socialism all around us, it's just that we let them (repugs) turn it into a bad word just like "liberal". police depts, fire depts, the militarily, the coast guard, nasa, cdc all of these are government run socialism should we privatize police and fire? if your premiums are paid up we'll extinguish your house afire?

11. Yes, strange so many on DU view this as FR
Sharpton didn't say Americans voted for socialism, he said in response to "some argue to socialism", that "then we'd have to say the American public overwhelmingly voted for socialism when they elected President Obama" and that Obama ran on health care reform.

In other words, Obama ran on health care reform, was elected with a decent margin, carrying many congressional seats as well. So to the people who like the questioner say that health care reform is socialism, then ipso facto if that were true then the American people "overwhelmingly voted for socialism".

He is not saying Americans voted for socialism, only that if the health bill is socialism, then that is what Americans voted for. Which is true.

What he said is true from elementary logic. A basic conditional. P is that the health bill and socialism are the same things, Q is that Americans voted for the health bill.

It is easy to twist his words around but he was not the first to say socialism, not did he misspeak, nor did he say anything crazy. What he says makes perfect sense.

REV. AL SHARPTON, CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER: I think that this is — began to transform the country the way the president had promised. This is what he ran on.

GERALDO RIVERA, FOX NEWS ANCHOR: Some argue to socialism.

SHARPTON: Well, first of all, then we'd have to say that the American public overwhelmingly voted for socialism when they elected President Obama.

9. Oh come on ...
the TITLE of the OP is not in context - you have to listen carefully to the whole thing!

Geraldo: ".... some would argue to socialism"
Sharpton: " well, first of all THEN we'd have to say that that the American public overwhelmingly voted for socialism ... "

Be sure to listen to ALL of it!
Sharpton is arguing the point that Obama IS DOING WHAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE wanted when we voted ;)

Sharpton is in NO WAY saying Obama is socialist.

10. Unrecommending because of misleading title. Al said in effect:
in response to the Fox News guy who called it "socialism," "if it is socialism, it's what the American people want."

He was saying, "call it what you will, Obama delivered what he said he'd do and what the people voted for."

He wasn't overtly saying this bill is socialism, or even implying it really.

12. Yes
It was reductio ad absurdum. He wasn't talking about the bill. He said to the statement that the health care bill was socialism, that if that were true, then that would also mean Americans voted for socialism. He just took the statement offered and took it to the logical conclusion.
