The ONLY payback will come from private citizens who act when the authorities ignore the crimes.

3. Mandates to have insurance

The Republicans really dwell on that, but isn't it required to have car insurance?

11. True

But it's still a mandate to have insurance

and we can't really readily choose to NOT have health...we have it whether we want it or not, good health or bad health. No health = dead.

Anyway, my wife and I looked at the overview of the bill and we're really not affected at all...not rich enough to pay the taxes, not poor enough to get the assistance. I have a feeling most are like us. In the end, we're pleased with the bill and how it helps our fellow Americans...

if this bill was in effect when my dad was alive, he may still be alive. It's conjecture, but I promise he'd have stood a better chance.

28. Some of us can't choose NOT to have a car, as well.
Especially those who live in large areas and work far away from home.

Your argument is old and wrong. Not everyone's circumstances are the same.

Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 02:55 PM by Toasterlad
You can chose to alter your life so that you don't need a car, if not paying for insurance is important enough to you. You cannot alter the fact that your body will break down in various ways over the course of your life.

YOUR argument is old and wrong, precisely BECAUSE everyone's circumstance (i.e. everyone has a body) are the same.

48. Then, by the same token....
you should have health care for your kids if you have kids. No health care, no kids. That requirement can be written in the law. After all, children ARE your property. That argument would blow right winger arguments out of the water.

24. Correct but...
even though people will attempt to drive without insurance, if you get stopped or get into an accident and you have no insurance, you could have your car impounded (in California you most definately will), your license taken away and you will be fined heavily. If your car gets impounded, it's extremely costly to get it out of impound. In addition, if your don't pay your insurance and/or it gets cancelled it gets reported to the DMV and your vehicle registration gets suspended too.

32. I hear the right wingers say that all the time...
I would agree with it if we had adequate Public Transportation in this country but we obviously don't!!!!

So, that arguement is simply worthless! We are required to have a car in order tomake a living so therefore we HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO BUY INSURANCE!!

Unless you are lucky enough to live in a big city with Public Transportation...And many of those cities are cutting service so even more people will be FORCED to buy insurance!

33. You Are Not In The Least Way Required To Have a Car
If not paying insurance is important enough for you, you can change your life so that you don't need one.

You can't eliminate your need for health care.

There are plenty of people who don't seek help when they are sick, simply because they don't have the financial means.

You don't see that not seeking help because you can't afford it doesn't eliminate the NEED?

I really think it would be in your best interest right now to say, "You know what? You're right. My bad. Sorry I said anything." I'm not sure you can dig that hole any deeper without striking water.

49. The purpose of the fine for not buying insurance is to pay for basic coverage provided by the state.
I heard this from Anthony Weiner in a video clip.

The idea is that if you don't have insurance, you are effectively insured, at least minimally, by the government's promise that if you have an emergency, then an emergency can't turn you away for lack of ability to pay.

It's very difficult to get real information. If Weiner is correct then I think the penalty is OK in principle, but may still be unfair if it puts too much burden on people who are not able to pay. Too many of our taxes are regressive, forcing people with less to pay a greater percentage of their income. That's not fair in a system like ours that is designed to protect the property of the wealthy.

12. Actually there is no mandate to have insurance in the bill. They've been removed.
There is a tax penalty but that is an opt-out option if the state has a better idea.

17. Let me be more clear in my statement.
Edited on Thu Mar-25-10 12:39 PM by vaberella
There is this mandate to have insurance but if it's more than 8% of your income you opt-out of insurance. 85% and a good majority of the 32 million people are working people and will be provided insurance by their jobs. So those people will NEVER be subject to any penalty. Secondly, it's really the employer who is faced with a penalty---and that penalty is to pay from $750-$2000 of per employee per year. So in essence it's just going to be cheaper for the employer to give their employee health care. Another thing with the tax----it's has an opt-out mechanism if the State finds another way insure people have health care.

So basically...the mandate is not mandate---it's weird because it comes across as such but logically speaking and when in action it doesn't work that way. Oh the rest of the 32 million who are just too poor will go into medicaid and that's why the funding for that has increased.

Here's some info on it, to be clear.

And not every state requires it. New Hampshire does not and neither does Wisconsin (at least for a little while longer).

Her condemnation, however, came after her remark about how awful this week has been for the constitution. :eyes: Why can't any of them simply say violence is wrong? So far, all the outcries I have witnessed have either blamed others, contained excuses/justifications, or denied its existence.
