1. wow, that host looked really uncomfortable
I almost feel guilty saying this, but I am starting to love how even staunch Republicans are starting to get turned off by the racist tea bagger types. I hope they continue to be loud and proud about their bigotry and end up fracturing their own party, honestly.

Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 09:35 AM by ericinne
I have to agree with the COMMENT MADE ABOUT THE C-Span callers. But I'll give the commentators this... They have to be the most professional people we know. If it was me hosting I know there would have been several times where I would have to roll my eyes up in my head, :eyes: or possibly break down into uncontrollable laughter at some of the idiots that rant on about stupid shit.

Watch the vid again, notice how calm, cool and collected the commentator is while hearing the words of a total racist moron.

7. Agree with the callers comments?
I don't know how you find that type of wording in what I wrote, but HELL NO!! That caller was a fucking racist lunatic.

8. OK I see
Oh I see why you think that's what I meant.

I have to agree with the C-Span callers comment
I meant the comment made by the OP. Sorry, I should have written that different.

10. You agree with him and his comment was anti-Obama, pro-Bush and...
clearly racist.

11. No, clearly a gramatical error.
Racist? If I would be agreeing with the racist guy, wouldn't I have wrote:

"I have to agree with the C-Span caller's comment"< notice the apostrophe indicating possession of the action "comment" belongs to the caller.

15. I accept that you miswrote but no matter how you parse it,
you agreed with the C-span caller (or his comments) and not the OP. You may not have meant to do so but no amount of grammatical hocus pocus will change it. It is a very odd mistake but not one in which grammar was the problem.

I am hardly the grammar police.

9. Ok then I did read that right, he agrees with the caller, so what I want to know is
without seeing the caller how an you tell what race the caller is? Or is it anyone who votes R but has something nice to say about the president must be a black. How do nit wits manage to shave without cutting their heads off is what I'd like to know.

24. Sorry, I am not following your rewrites.....
I am trying to. It seems like you keep saying, let me rewrite this because what I meant was completely different than what people are interpreting. But then your rewrite sounds exactly like the original. Maybe I am missing something. For example, if you say let me change it from "I agree with the caller" to "I agree with what the caller is saying", in the end you are saying the same thing. From my point of view, if you agree with the caller saying that there are too many black people calling c-span, it does sound racist to me. Even if you say, I don't agree with the caller, but I do agree with his point (which is that too many black people are calling C-Span), it is really the exact thing. Nobody wants to be called a racist if they aren't, but you make it hard to understand exactly what your point is to defend (or not defend) it.

29. Well let me explain it ONE MORE TIME then..
The OP wrote:
In defense of the GOP, just this one time, C-SPAN callers are the nuttiest people in the world.

And what was it I originally wrote?
I have to agree with the C-Span callers comment

MEANING, I agree with the OP about C-Span callers being the nuttiest people in the world.

What's Nucking Futs about this, is your calling me a damn racist AND YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT RACE I AM. (Hispanic BTW)

WTF?

Had I NOT meant that, why would I follow it up by saying:
Watch the vid again, notice how calm, cool and collected the commentator is while hearing the words of a total racist moron.

And you SOMEHOW interpret that to mean I am a racist, even though I projected my opinion several times to say the other guy was a racist moron?

Are you just messing with me or what?

An apology would by nice BTW.

30. Okay, now I see.
Well, I think that there were two comments made about the C-Span callers...

a) One by the racist guy in the video
b) One by the guy who posted the video

Since the focus of the whole thread was on "a" I think everybody assume that you were talking about those comments, and not the ones written underneath the video.

Apologies for misrepresenting you. No hard feelings I hope.

31. What you are trying to do is use "CSPAN callers" as an
Edited on Mon Mar-29-10 11:18 PM by tblue37
adjective modifying "comment." What you mean to say goes something like this:
on the model of "the red dress" = a dress that is red
"the CSPAN callers comment" = the comment about the CSPAN callers
But you can't use that phrasing, because everyone is reading it as a typo in which you left out an apostrophe. They think you mean, "I agree with the CSPAN caller's comment," and since "the CSPAN caller's comment" is a racist comment, they think you are agreeing with it.

In their defense, the way you have phrased it isn't grammatically possible, and it really does look like a typo for "CSPAN caller's comment," so they are not being deliberately obtuse.

Since the misreading looks more like what your phrasing says, it is easier to misead the phrase than to understand it as you really mean it. I always tell my students to be careful when they write, because if something can be misunderstood, it will be misunderstood.

I also think they might be reading it as your saying you agree with the racist comment about CSPAN callers, though it is the OP comment about CSPAN callers that you are agreeing with, not the racist comment about CSPAN callers made by a CSPAN caller.

Oh, and I am a grammar guru: http://www.grammartips.homestead.com/index.html

32. Yes I know
Yes, I explained that HOURS ago in response 11. I had realized my writing error, and stated I understood why it would cause confusion the way it was originally written.

I am NOT a grammar guru. It takes away from my originality and writing style. Interpretation is always subjective, but one thing is certain, I would NEVER lower myself to the level of racist. I've received too much racism and stereotyping directed at myself over the years to ever wanna believe myself to be superior enough to belittle others for who they are.

Ignorant people suck. Racism is nothing more then ignorance. I may not be top speller, I might not know much about politics, but I'm by no means ignorant.

3. C span in the last 10 yrs has become more and more "conservative"........
..........leaning. That Brian Lamb is a fucking douchebag, softballs to RW guests and KGB style interrogations of "liberals". I watch Cspan still even though they have slipped in my opinion and of all the calls I have heard it's about 25-1 white/black. So this fucking goofball was pissed at that? Probably doesn't want ANY black or brown "losers" calling in. That last sentence was sarcasm in case anyone gets their panties in a twist. Nowadays you have to be extra specific at DU.

having to listen to two or three rw nutcases for every remotely sane person. Dems were routinely cut off while R's allowed to spew whatever nonsense they wanted uninterrupted. It's bullshit.

..........The ratio of RW conservatives to REAL liberals is probably around 10-1, same with the W/E booknotes guests.

For catering to the teabaggers.

I swear, everytime I flip that station on they have one teabagger function or speaker or another, spouting their bullshit.

Why give that group serious consideration at all?

Could you imagine the outrage if C-SPAN constantly televised Socialist meetings or booked Nader or Chomsky every other week?

Good God--the Rightwinger's heads would explode.

And they should have hung up on that racist bastard from the getgo. Free speech is not hate speech.

This pampered teabagger group is so catered to by the so-called mainstream media as some sort of serious enterprise when it's nothing but a collection of misinformed lunatics. C-SPAN promotes them as much as anyone.

......Television as something that is BOTH entertaining AND educational/informative as follows: FSTV with LINK as a close 2nd, Cspan a disappointing 3rd and PBS a deteriorating 4th and then ALL the rest. I am talking strictly US consumption here, I have "heard" that some foreign outlets are quite "fair", but have no direct experience. Oh, I forgot Al-Jazeera in the above mix, that is one foreign one I have seen and was impressed at how "fair" they were.
