Dr. Dumenil is one of the world's foremost theorists of neoliberalism and economic crisis and is the author of numerous influential books, many of which have been translated into several languages. These include Capital Resurgent: Roots of the Neoliberal Revolution (2004) and his forthcoming The Crisis of Neoliberalism: from the subprime to the great contraction.

2. Neo...con/liberal - misleading to the uninformed
Aside from the obvious slip of the use of Neocon for Neoconservative, when the reality is more like neocon as in neoconvict! The use of the "Neo" prefix is extremely misleading to the uninformed, meaning most Americans. Europeans and the educated from other nations seem to have a very good handle on the true context, but...we are oh so special a nation LOL!
I explain the use of the "neo..." prefix this way, to people who obviously don't understand: Classical liberalism meant what we interpret today as Adam Smith "invisible hand" stuff, no government involvement in the economy, most recently popularized in the works of Milton Friedman "Free-to-choose' etc. (if ya' got the money...). "Neocon" as in neoconservative is the foreign policy "military arm" of the global neoliberal consensus...meaning the trans-national ruling class. These Neo/liberal/cons have control of the governments of the major nations and use those military forces to advance by force neoliberal globalized policies ...when a national government doesn't knuckle under. JMHO.

3. Good stuff....but again, total misnomer for the subject matter...
Edited on Tue Mar-30-10 12:27 PM by ooglymoogly
Orwellian comes to mind; As if it was titled by the top 3% and their bullhorn shills, the corporate media; To minimize and confuse the impact and import of its shocking and dangerously serious meaning. This book is no less than an indictment of the deleterious greed at the top. Words and their kaleidoscopic nuances matter.

4. On The Whole...
I agree with what he has to say.

I might add that there is a generational separation between "old" democrats and "new" democrats in how they view reality. Those (like my daughter) who were born in the 80's have no experience with the "old" philosophical beliefs of being a democrat. They have abandoned the basic beliefs of the old democratic party and have been absorbed in the swing to the Right that our country has taken since 1980. This does tie into what this professor is saying in that the "new" democrats have not stood up to fight this swing to the right.

5. The corporations have taken great advantage in neoliberal policies.
Edited on Tue Mar-30-10 01:17 PM by MissMarple
Many Americans have been taken in by the spin given to them by the right wing propaganda machine. They take a few good points, pushed to the extreme, and proceed to build an economic policy on them. And, as we know, a few good points provide a poor foundation for complex economic policy. The use of the Laffer Curve is a case in point. To rid themselves of the annoying burden of taxes the corporatists have push the idea that tax cuts always promote growth. Always. Honest. Then they say: Regulation is bad, it inhibits economic growth. No regulation means we can compete. Wages? We have profit to make, so the underemployed, the unemployed and the poorly paid will just have to suck it up. Why do you hate business and the creation of wealth?

Reaganomics was problematic enough, but these clowns have literally run it and us into the ground. And now Clinton is regretting some of his neoliberal policies. George Bush blew right over Reagan and Clinton and embraced neoliberalism to the hilt, and then some, giving cover to the corporatists for a raid on the U.S. economy. Many countries have adopted neoliberalism at some level. But, we, reveling in our American individualism, have attained stellar distinction in allowing Wall Street to rape our economy. Apparently only 40% of our workers are adequately compensated for their work.

The wiki article on this is quite interesting. Have a look. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoliberalism
