Vote for The Young Turks (Once Each Day) on the Audience Choice Voting Poll at www.vote.streamys.org/ (3/22/10 through 4/11/10)!

Summary: Cenk talks about how the private industry (sadly but predictably) went to work right after the HC bill was passed to use their lawyers to find loopholes to exploit. Denying coverage to kids with pre-existing conditions for a few more years, raising all of our premiums, getting around having to cover most dependents up to age 26 and more. You can http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/29/health/policy/29health.html|read about it here>. Cenk goes back to his original criticism of this 'reform', i.e. why didn't we do anything to change the underlying system? This outcome was predictable with the for-profit insurance industry.

2. This is what happens when you try to coddle crooks
An honest attempt at real reform would have (at the least) included a government PO to keep them honest.

But noooooo, that might hurt profits.

4. You know what's more annoying?
Edited on Tue Mar-30-10 12:23 PM by ihavenobias
The people who were screaming about him being a closet Republican and Teabagger because he predicted this. In that context, the "I told ya so" is justified IMO.

Just like when he wrote an editorial after the first bank bailout was proposed to argue that it was a huge corporate gift and robbing of taxpayers, etc. He was ripped a new one at the time (but of course most people seem to agree with that sentiment now). Or like when he said months ago that we wouldn't be passing a public option...

12. Cenk was right on this one again
but so were many of us, unfortunately many of us including Cenk were labeled "leftbaggers", closet Republicans and the like. The Dems and Obama needed a win and I guess they got it, but what worries me is when the public at large starts realizing what we actually got.

I too had these same reactions. There were signs, clear signs but so many WANT to believe. My honeymoon with Barack was over when he made his cabinet appointments.

7. Great. 1 easy PR nightmare for the industry tackled, that still leaves the premium increases.

10. Is a reply that offers compliance with principles in a letter an enforcable document?
And when Republicans are back, I suppose they can write another letter with new principles.

23. Yes, we're lucky that the insurance industry is so reasonable ...
... we don't have to worry about them taking advantage of loopholes or ambiguous language to allow people to die.

6. I blame Obama, the Senate and the people who sold out in the first few days after it was clear
Edited on Tue Mar-30-10 12:31 PM by 20score
Obama sold out. They started with the derision and talking points and stopped fighting for a good bill.
They are to blame for all the cost increases, etc.

But the insurance companies will fight any reform with everything they've got, so I'm not holding my breath. That would be bad for my health, anyway. x(

20. I've got 2 questions related to this
1. Does anyone know the definitive reason the PO was dropped?

2. Can the PO or Medicare buy in still be added now or sometime in the future?

24. Turbo, we have the words of Obama and my Senator's CoS
Edited on Wed Mar-31-10 11:34 AM by Mithreal
PO was blocked by Obama. I don't think Obama comes out and says it, just that he rejected many lefty proposals. Before Obama's admission, my Senate leadership Senator's chief of staff said Obama was obstructing and asking things be removed. I did not ask specifically about PO, but one of the examples I was given was removing medicare buy-in. Follow the money and look for evidence of what Obama fought for. Did you really expect he would admit that he was DEFINITIVELY the one who rejected that particular overwhelmingly supported lefty proposal?

Can? Of course, but who expects that this Democratic Party WILL DO any such thing?

I know I am not shedding any new light, I am just wondering why you are even asking these questions. Sometime in the future? You have my crystal ball.

25. Thanks for your reply
The reason I'm asking is because a) I have yet to hear a definitive explanation as to why the PO was dropped and b) because I'd like to know there's still a possibility that PO or Medicare buy in are in a proverbial coma and not actually dead, no medical pun intended.

21. is anyone surprised? . . . many have been saying all along that . . .
insurance companies will find ways around whatever they don't like in so-called healthcare "reform," be it denying coverage or simply raising rates to unconscionable levels for those with pre-existing conditions . . . they will still make their profits by maximizing their income (premiums) and minimizing their expenses (benefits paid out) . . . did anyone really believe otherwise? . . .
