Views on DU: 2341 | Vote for The Young Turks (Once Each Day) on the Audience Choice Voting Poll at www.vote.streamys.org/ (3/22/10 through 4/11/10)! Summary: Cenk "mixes it up" with conservative Mike Lewis of politicsdaily.com on Dylan Ratigan's program on MSNBC. First they discuss Obama's new Israel/Palestine peace plan (Cenk loves it, the conservative hates it) and they go on to discuss the VA Gov. Bob McDonnell Confederate History Month controversy.

I love Cenk in this! I really hope MSNBC keeps bringing Cenk into the conversation. His voice is clear, sensible and without equal right now. This fucking dink asshole came off like a pathetic douche bag.

4. The Civil War was ALL about slavery- |
|
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 01:29 PM by WhoIsNumberNone
In the Confederates' own words it was all about slavery. it was only when the war was over -after they'd lost- when this revisionist bullshit about there being all these other factors started: "Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens said that slavery was the chief cause of secession in his Cornerstone Speech shortly before the war. After Confederate defeat, Stephens became one of the most ardent defenders of the Lost Cause. There was a striking contrast between Stephens' post-war states' rights assertion that slavery did not cause secession and his pre-war Cornerstone Speech. Similarly, Confederate President Jefferson Davis also reversed his original position, that the central cause of the war was the issue of slavery, arguing after the war that states' rights was its principal cause. While Southerners often used states' rights arguments to defend slavery, sometimes roles were reversed, as when Southerners demanded national laws to defend their interests with the Gag Rule and the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850. On these issues, Northerners wanted to defend their states' rights.""Support for secession was strongly correlated to the number of plantations in the region. States of the Deep South, which had the greatest concentration of plantations, were the first to secede. The upper South slave states of Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee had fewer plantations and rejected secession until the Fort Sumter crisis forced them to choose sides."Wikipedia"The people of Georgia having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery. They have endeavored to weaken our security, to disturb our domestic peace and tranquility, and persistently refused to comply with their express constitutional obligations to us in reference to that property, and by the use of their power in the Federal Government have striven to deprive us of an equal enjoyment of the common Territories of the Republic."http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/reasons.html#Georgia"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin."http://sunsite.utk.edu/civil-war/reasons.html#Mississippi

13. A quote from the despicable "cornerstone" speech |
|
in 1861...
"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery -- subordination to the superior race -- is his natural and normal condition."
