Roger Scruton's reasoned yet impassioned essay reminds us that beauty is at the very heart of being human. Everyone who loves art--and life--will embrace his message.

1. Maybe only ugliness matters around here? This video is a sensation on other boards
sparking debate that asks if societies rejection of Beauty for the strictly utilitarian, rampant plundering and the reflection of ugliness in every aspect of our culture is actually CAUSING the increasing ugliness and chaos within our society. You can directly link it to what's happening to our Nation politically right now.

4. questioning something causes it?
That makes no sense whatsoever.

5. Not questioning; perpetuating
If all and artist or architect sees in the world is ugliness, and all they present to the world is their hideous vision of that ugliness, then eventually that's primarily what all of us will be wallowing in.

6. there are many artists and architects.
It's the variety that matters, not any one statement.

To me ugliness would be any one unrelenting style unrelentingly enforced everywhere, no matter how beautiful or plain.

Anyway we're all responsible for contributing. If one is wallowing, then one is being passive about their own tastes.

7. Since you won't listen to the entire argument it's pointless to go any further. You are far
off the mark on the message here. Quite far.

I suspect that you would argue against the basic elements of design as well: http://goldennumber.net/design.htm

2. Thank you for posting this.
Sadly, this video will be lost in a sea of "fucks" but it's a welcome and well timed reminder to me.

They've uploaded a large amount of old movies, too. Any recommendations?

8. Thanks Turborama! Glad to see that someone has taken the time to watch it
without having a kneejerk reaction to the title and jumping to silly conclusions. I haven't looked at the old movie offerings, but there's probably some good stuff there!

10. Not "beauty" defined by the ruling elites but *discovering beauty* in all of NATURE is what matters.
This woman represents the BEAUTY of struggle against all odds. I'd rather befriend people like her than the political ruling elites any day.

Nuns and Priests who serve the poor and take Vows of Poverty are of "equal beauty."

11. I think, again, these are examples that appeal to realism
or pragmatism, because to you they serve an economic/political purpose and not necessarily an aesthetic one. (Are these pictures pleasing to look at? Uplifting to the spirit?) The philosopher in the youtube vid argues that "beauty in art" is an expression of ideals and human potential and not necessarily reflective of reality. I think his point is that this kind of beauty has been lost in modern art.
