12. I remember a similar tone from the right wingers

when they were complaining about Carter's nuclear deterrent policy. And they probably had a similar distortion of reality. As I recall, they claimed that Carter's policy was that we would not retaliate until nuclear bombs had hit American soil (by which time half of our arsenal would be destroyed on the ground) but good ol' Ronnie Raygun was going to allow us to hit the Russians as soon as their nukes were airborne! Yay!
