31. Yeah, why would anyone have an issue with a racist misogynistic maroon
of a doctor, who doesn't believe in evolution and wants to cut every single social program under our beautiful blue skies... while having lived off the public tit for the past 2 decades. Right?

I swear seeing some DU posters making Rand's views look milquetoast in comparison is rather fascinating (in a deeply scary sort of way)

but it's hard to criticize him on his international/war policy.

As long as he's raising hell in their camp, good enough for me.

13. Ron Paul? Progressive? Don't make me laugh...
He's a racist lunatic who wants to drag us back into the 19th century with his gold-standard based economic policies.

I used to live in his district and the guy is a joke and a crook. He campaigns on being a deep believer in term limits yet is a career politician who refuses to live his own proposed standard. And at a time when his district was suffering the worst flooding in a decade, he was on Capitol Hill giving a conspiracy-theory driven speech about the evils of FEMA at a time when FEMA were the only ones doing a damn thing to help people in our area. Paul didn't show up until a few days later and gave a speech from a country club some five miles away from the nearest water line.

14. I didn't know US congressmen bailed water?
Sorry, I am not from the US, but isn't it a tad excessive to expect a US Congressman to bail water? Isn't that a local issue?

I did like this speech, agree with him completely, you guys waste too much money invading other countries. And your politicians seem to be too beholden and subservient to Israel. Don't you think it's pathetic US politicians have to pledge allegiance to Israel all the time?

21. A congressman is the lowest "local" position at the Federal level.
While it might not have been necessary for Paul to have shown up and start bailing as the rain was falling and people were losing their homes, it MIGHT have been nice for him to not actively try to cut funding for a federal organization that was provides disaster relief at a time when the people he (in theory) represents were losing everything they owned and drowning.

27. Paul is a REgressive!
but I don't believe he is the evil genius you portray him. On the other hand I have nothing against a well run empire: if it's needed. Right now the US empire does what the British and the Spanish did for centuries: makes commerce safe and takes a generous tax income on other people's trade. As long as that's not excessive every nation is happy to pay the price of dollar denominated commodity markets because the US military makes sure that local powers don't take over shipping routes and resources.

Problem lately (for about 30 years since Vietnam) is that the US is run by a bunch of thugs and warlords that are becoming more and more criminal by the day. The solution to this is not the sudden dismantling of the empire but the transitioning to the rule of law and perhaps on the long run that could be international law with international military instead of an imperial military.

Of course Ron Paul would be the first to denounce the UN and any international law: he would go back to the stone age and revert world trade to a barter system until we all crawl back on trees.

18. I like your point, even the 'conservatives'
didn't really want to elect a conservative. Its not funny, I think, but says a lot about that group of cons, as in con-men; they are nothing like real conservatives. Haven't studied this, but I suspect Paul's a lot more like Goldwater than anything ELSE in the repug 'party.'

41. If you ever do study libertarianism, try asking them about "social costs"
In economics there's a term for the general costs of doing business that no one is technically responsible for. It's the added cost of a business fixing its flat tires, which goes up when roads are bad and goes down when the government upkeeps the roads right. This cost applies to medical services, health services, pollution, building codes, and even the regulations needed for Wall Street. It's at the core of why we need government and libertarians, as a rule, like to pretend this doesn't exist.

Yea war! Yea for men, women, and children dying needlessly! Yea for preemptive and unnecessary war! Doesn't this guy know what it means to be a modern conservative? He is supposed to only talk about how we are wasting money on social services, welfare, redistribution of wealth, the unconstitutional Obamacare, and useless stimulus bills. How dare he talk about defense spending as if it were wasteful! Defense spending is what the federal government is for!!!

Just in case because this is, afterall, DU... :sarcasm:

39. There is a libertarian fault line in the GOP that deserves a sledge hammer.
The Cato Institute determined that libertarians usually do not support their own party, and instead vote for either the Republican or Democratic party at a ratio of 3:1. The 2008 election was the only election where they split 50:50, and you saw what happened when they failed to support the GOP in their usual numbers.

The attitude towards Israel and the American Empire is an obvious fault line in the Republican party, as this video demonstrates.

How it plays out in 2010 is obvious. Republicans, as usual, will pretend to be libertarians when they're talking to a libertarian audience, and "conservatives" when they're talking to a conservative audience, and win big on it as usual. What happens in 2012, however, is a different story. There are two possible scenarios:

1. Paul runs for the GOP nomination and the usual Republican machine will work against him. Fox New excludes him from the debates again, angry Ron Robots chase Hannity down the street with signs again, and the Republican party is split again, like it was in 2008.

2. Paul takes a backroom deal to stay away from the Republican leadership contest in exchange for the winning candidate giving him the VP slot, and the Republicans get to have it both ways.

40. He really sticks to his values. But he's a darker person than his liberal admirers would like.
There's an unfortunate racist strain that has run through many of his off the cuff comments in the past. But he's no jingoist and he thinks things through logically in light of his privileged, 19th Century ideology. As a result, he's no shill for corporate interests. I admire his independence, but there's a dark underbelly to this man. I don't think I'd enjoy talking to him at a cocktail party.
