3. Gotta be one of my favorite films of all time.
A little fantastical at times but so full of parallels to whats going on today. The news guy is so much like O'Leilly. It's spot on.

17. For future reference...
There is a sarcasm tag. It looks like this ---> :sarcasm:

To insert it, simply add a colon on either side of the word "sarcasm".

Oh, and welcome to DU!

We need to have this broadcast soon!

I'm still also remembering the 28th of November, when two events happened that day that seem ironically tied to each other!

because it all relates to us.

Evey: "My father was a writer. You'd have liked him. He used to say that artists use lies to tell the truth while politicians use them to cover the truth up."

and my favorite of all, used just so recently to convince us to give * more power:

Sutler: "Mr. Dascombe, what we need is a clear message to the people of the country! This message should be read in every newspaper, heard on every radio, seen on every television. This message must resound throughout the ENTIRE INTERLINK! I want this country to realize that we stand on the edge of oblivion! I want every man, woman, and child to understand how close we are to chaos! I WANT EVERYONE TO REMEMBER WHY THEY NEED US!"

We need them, their pieces of paper, their wars and their subjugation of us like we need a hole in our heads.

We don't need them. They need US.

19. I have been reading
"A Power governments cannot suppress," by Howard Zinn.

It is time to read and understand the real history of your country and mine...and theirs, too.

To quote Zinn,

"...writing about history, for me, is never a neutral act. By writing, I hope to awaken a great consciousness of racial injustice, sexual bias, class inequality, and national hubris."

North Americans don't know their own history; it is based on genocide and slavery and an unwillingness to believe that the other guy has a point. We continue in that mistaken belief, and it is not only wrong, but doing great harm to the land and to peoples of other countries. If there is to be equality, the entire world cannot consume resources at the rate of the US, in particular, and the west in general. It's past time to move these folks out of office, make the world round again, and demand that those who have damaged the environment fix it.

36. The text of V's speech:
"Good evening, London. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of every day routine- the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, thereby those important events of the past usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, a celebration of a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. Last night I sought to end that silence. Last night I destroyed the Old Bailey, to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than four hundred years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot."

25. It is surprising, isn't it?
On the other hand, it's not, really.

I watched that again the other day, and I found myself sympathizing with Smith. He'd gotten too good at his job...too smart, too far out of the box, and he was bored. In short, he'd evolved. And there was no place for him to go.

That's going to be us soon. The smart among us, the dreamers, the people who reach are going to have to pretend to be stupid or be taken back "behind the chemical shed." There won't be any jobs other than the service of our "masters"

Maybe the chemical shed would be preferable. Actually, V had a good idea- I think I'll just loot the Censors' stockpile. I'm sure there will be interesting toys to play with, as well as real butter :D

33. They were afraid. He pointed that out.
There is no crime against being afraid. There is a crime to illogically act on that fear. If not a legal crime, then a crime against oneself.

Excuses for being afraid are pretty pathetic though.

35. Hugo Weaving is an amazing actor.
Edited on Mon Aug-06-07 11:37 AM by Totally Committed
He's won the Australian equivalent of the Oscar for Best Actor twice, and has been in a lot of great movies. I first saw him early in the 90's in the film "Proof", where he played a blind man who took pictures of what happened in his daily life and hired someone to describe them to him.

Then, I saw him in one of my favorite Australian movies of all time -- "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" where he played a drag queen named Mitzi (Mitzi is the one on the right). If you think picturing him as Agt. Smith is difficult....

... Anyway, it was such a touching movie. I loved it.

He's been one of my favorite actors for a long time. I hated that he played Smith, because his acting skills were ever used fully in any of the Matrix movies.

All that having been said, I don't know anyone who could have acted with a mask completely covering his face, and managed to get as much emotion across as he did. It was a great role for him. I wasn't wild about the really twisted dynamic in the relationship between V and Evey, but I did love that movie.
