Rep.Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) says the President and Democrats need to move forward with comprehensive immigration reform before they loose the Latino constituency. Gutierrez sat down with The Hill to discuss his take on why his party leadership has allowed immigration to take a back seat to other legislation.

1. Where are the going to go, to the tea party party?
There is no good solution to this problem. Nothing you can come up with is satisfactory to enough people. Immigrants want open boarders. Many here want the borders closed. American workers want to not have to compete against people who will work for less than minimum wage. Some want all undocumented people deported. Others want to give them citizenship as they want for themselves.

This is a problem without a solution. In my mind the answer is to get the Mexican government to help seal the border and make Mexico work to create a country that can support its people so they do not have to come here. We can not unilaterally solve this problem.

I would put sanctions on Mexico until they help us with this problem.

2. I talk to Latino voters all the time who don't place much importance on immigration reform
Here in AZ, we have a lot of Hispanic immigrants but we also have a lot of Hispanics who are 7th generation Americans. Voters tend to be in the latter category.

3. Perhaps they would like things run as they are in Republican Arizona?
Wouldn't that be special?

Talk about biting off your nose to spite your face.

5. Stay home? great idea.
How about this, Latinos throw their support behind financial reform. Really support the President on this and don't just let the right control the conversation. Then when financial reform is passed, Obama owes them. I get tired of seeing these single issue voting blocks not being able to take the blinders off.
