1. Defense of the Constitution is a mental illness? I guess DU is just one huge
mental institution then.

Hi fellow inmates!

7. I've long suspected this....
once the USSR collapsed, our gov't got to use all of their oppressive and authoritarian devices on Americans.

In addition, look at other ways that our Corporate Gov't has affected a great number of citizens (esp. young males): porn and violent video games. These have the added benefit of making young males more prone to enter the military where they act out what they have been seeing. Hatred of women is encouraged...and our IndustrialMilitaryCongressionalComplex promotes this.

8. The FBI brochure is just naming the "terrorists" namely you, can't have that during martial law
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 09:44 AM by CGowen
there is nothing about Prozac or Ritalin and stuff

I like "Lone Individuals"

I guess the FBI needs some help

The FBI is taking cues from the CIA to recruit thousands of covert informants in the United States as part of a sprawling effort to boost its intelligence capabilities.

According to a recent unclassified report to Congress, the FBI expects its informants to provide secrets about possible terrorists and foreign spies, although some may also be expected to aid with criminal investigations, in the tradition of law enforcement confidential informants. The FBI did not respond to requests for comment on this story.

The FBI said the push was driven by a 2004 directive from President Bush ordering the bureau to improve its counterterrorism efforts by boosting its human intelligence capabilities.

The aggressive push for more secret informants appears to be part of a new effort to grow its intelligence and counterterrorism efforts. Other recent proposals include expanding its collection and analysis of data on U.S. persons, retaining years' worth of Americans' phone records and even increasing so-called "black bag" secret entry operations.

To handle the increase in so-called human sources, the FBI also plans to overhaul its database system, so it can manage records and verify the accuracy of information from "more than 15,000" informants, according to the document. While many of the recruited informants will apparently be U.S. residents, some informants may be overseas, recruited by FBI agents in foreign offices, the report indicates.

9. Many Americans are complicit in this...
How many people do you know who would rather pop a prescription pill than change their diet to lower cholesterol, for example?

We want the fast fix and it's made us too accepting of putting all kinds of things into our bodies. Medicating kids for ADD is easier than fixing the real problems.

I'm not saying there aren't people who NEED medication, but I do believe we are overmedicated. Once I went to the doctor and he prescribed something and I asked what would happen if I didn't take it. He said I'd still get better. SO why take it?

Aren't doctors paid for writing prescriptions?

10. Without that pill, I would die
I have familial hypercholesterolemia and would have a blood cholesterol level of 500 if I didn't take that pill.

And that is eating a diet of tofu and working out all of the time.

Pick another "quick fix" that Americans like because you are barking up the wrong tree with those cholesterol pills.

11. Read what I said: "I'm not saying there's aren't people who NEED medication"
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 10:51 AM by VLC
You would fit into that part of what I said.

YOU need it, many people do not, and many people can cut their cholesterol by changing their diet.

Don't try to pick a fight with me over something I didn't say.

13. Because so many need it to survive
it is a poor choice.

Caveats or no.

Pick something people do not actually need to make a better point, and you wouldn't need to caveat.

It is just a poor point because your example has too many exceptions.....exceptions that get people's hackles up like me.

16. No, that was EXACTLY the point.
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 03:50 PM by VLC
Some people need it and get it. Others take it because it's easy. Changing diet and exercising more is considered hard by most Americans, that's why cholesterol is a good example. Maybe you think it's a bad example because my point is not what you still want it to be.

You wouldnt' have to get your hackles up if you read what I said. You had no reason to go into self-preservation mode. No ones trying to take anything away from you.

19. You point is well-taken
Americans are a quick fix nation...we have been conditioned to be that way. There were no strawmen brought up.

But your example to ilustrate your point is poor. You picked a life-or-death pill to many Americans.....millions, in fact. And yes, I take it personally.

Life or death stuff tends to make you that way, and I honestly don't want to field accusations, private or public, that I am just a lazy ass because I take these pills. I'm pretty sure that the depressed do not want to be accused of not doing the hard work because they are taking Prozac, either. Ever been depressed? Not something that is easy to crawl out of by yourself by pulling up the ole bootstraps.

I hope you get my point, now. I do not argue with your premise, but your examples are poor.

21. I wasn't accusing you.
Yes, I get your point. I still think it's a valid example and I know people who take pills for cholesterol and have not changed a single thing - still smoking, eating crap, etc.

I understand you think it's not a good example, but I still think it is.

17. This video is incredibly weak, it seems to me. First of all, it's just one lousy brochure...
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 04:48 PM by Perry Logan
I'm sorry, but one ill-worded brochure does not a takeover make.

Then we switch to an entirely different topic--the over-medication of children. That is certainly a valid issue. But it doesn't clearly connect to the scary FBI brochure. And it certainly doesn't make the U.S. the Soviet Union. We're definitely getting close to Conspiracyville here.

23. Everything starts somewhere, and it usually starts small.
I always remember that the NAZIs started with one small group of nuts in one small beer hall in Munich.
