4. He has on recess appointed John Bolton and then touts McCrystal (the torture God)
as being legitimate. Sometimes BM flaunts his ignorance by letting obvious propaganda go unchallenged. Both the oil spill and the minors deaths were due to deregulation and non-union protection by greedy men of tyranny just like John Bolton, who would never have been confirmed by the senate to be ambassador to the UN in any way shape or form except by the sneaky SC appointed president. and here BM gives him a national voice instead of just smacking him in the head with a shovel. I love BM but I'd like him so much more if he shoved Sarah Palin's head up Bolton's ass and dropped them both in the thick of the oil spill. The cod fish is already extinct and now the mussels and God knows what else from the mere refusal to accept that you cannot have sustained permanent growth when you have "finite" resources and refuse to come into balance with the universe. Oh how some will wish they paid $15/gal when we run out of even the oil necessary to make our medications that keep us alive and healthy. Authoritarian stupid must die.

"IT TAKES A REPUBLICAN" to ruin everything...anything they touched for the past 30yrs...blew up...and they have nothing new so they keep their Boltons and Gingrichs and Crystals and McCains etc. alive every week...even on BM.

Nobody wants to hear a damn thing that comes out of Bolton's mouth...just ask the UN.

8. Yup, Bill, like the rest of us,
is weak in some areas. Overall he is pretty well informed but allowing these remarks to go unchallenged is going on media wide and it has to stop. I never hear a Democrat defend a position, it sucks! It is bad enough that their side controls the damn media to begin with.

10. his new rules segment sounded like empty moralizing
and he conveniently left out anti abortion killers. I always find it a bit repulsive when well fed comfortable people criticize the morality of human beings half way around the world who take life as it's dished out by mother nature: without starbucks coffee in the morning and anesthetics for tooth aches or gunshot wounds.

12. Please
There's no excuse for the actions of some Muslims especially those who react with death threats to depictions of Mohammed. Wtf does Starucks have to do with any of this? Stick to the subject please.

14. you threaten their lives every time you put gas in your car
the sad part is that somehow that not only doesn't compute in the mass produced lizard brain, it makes you feel outright superior and entitled. and please: save yourself the fake indignation! I enjoy bashing religious nutbags like the next guy, but only if they have bank accounts and drive to work every day from some quiet, comfortable suburb like I do. I am a little more ambivalent to pass judgment on people who's natural resources fuel my lifestyle, I don't know just this thing my mom used to say when I was growing up: "don't take little Steve's candy, it's not yours and we don't take what's not ours". Not that it makes me uncomfortable driving on stolen resources or anything, it just makes me question myself when it comes to dishing out unchecked fake outrage against the "primitives"...perhaps it's just me, carry on nothing to worry about ;)

22. Sorry...
freedom of speech, freedom from religion, and laws disallowing beating and subjugating women are not empty moralizing. If they cannot adapt, they can stay where they are. Just because their country of origin is a shithole does not mean we should allow them to drag us down to that level.

and it's not our oil that fuels their life style, so you have to forgive me if I am a little skeptical about this fake moral outrage.

not until we clean up our act. When we do, then perhaps we can lecture them from a high moral horse.

18. Glenn Greenwald showed how false this premise is
when Douthat made it last week in the NYT that Bill Maher makes here.

Well worth time reading in it's entirety.

http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/26/douthat/index.html

"It looks like Ross Douthat picked the wrong month to try to pretend that threat-induced censorship is a uniquely Islamic practice. Corpus Christi is the same play that was scheduled and then canceled (and then re-scheduled) by the Manhattan Theater Club back in 1998 as a result of "anonymous telephone threats to burn down the theater, kill the staff, and 'exterminate' McNally." Both back then and now, leading the protests (though not the threats) was the Catholic League, denouncing the play as "blasphemous hate speech."

I abhor the threats of violence coming from fanatical Muslims over the expression of ideas they find offensive, as well as the cowardly institutions which acquiesce to the accompanying demands for censorship. I've vigorously condemned efforts to haul anti-Muslim polemicists before Canadian and European "human rights" (i.e., censorship) tribunals. But the very idea that such conduct is remotely unique to Muslims is delusional, the by-product of Douthat's ongoing use of his New York Times column for his anti-Muslim crusade and sectarian religious promotion.

The various forms of religious-based, intimidation-driven censorship and taboo ideas in the U.S. -- what Douthat claims are non-existent except when it involves Muslims -- are too numerous to chronicle. One has to be deeply ignorant, deeply dishonest or consumed with petulant self-victimization and anti-Muslim bigotry to pretend they don't exist. I opt (primarily) for the latter explanation in Douthat's case."

33. EXCELLENT article - thank you for posting!
Hooray for Greenwald - it's heartening to hear a sane voice in all of this. I get a sinking feeling of hopelessness in these threads where Americans congratulate themselves on their imagined superiority over the people their own country is oppressing and slaughtering. The power of propaganda is terrifying.

I truly despise Bill Maher. The bonus irony here is that his own misogyny runs a mile deep.

Have you ever watched bill maher? Maher hates all religions and in particular christianity, probably becuase of his being brought up in it. He is usually defending arab americans. If you thinks he hates Islam rent religulous some time. But it is nice to see him call them out for some of the horrible things they do like the burkha(or hijab, I get them confused sometimes) repression of women and promises of death to anyone who dare criticize their sacred cow, much like christians used to do when they were in power and would do again if they could. Ever hear of the inquisitions?

35. what the hell?
Apparently I've watched him a lot more than you. I'll tell you exactly when I gave up on Maher officially. It was the night he had Netanyahu on his show and practically smothered him with kisses. Whatever Israel does is a-okay (or given the gentlest possible toothless criticism) but he depicts Arabs as sub-human. He has always been grotesquely sexist, so I don't think I could witness his phony burkha outrage without vomiting.
