4. If a company office leases its copiers.....
...it's still left up to the leasing company to erase any info on the hard drives before they sell them on the secondary market.

- Which means probably not erasing them at all.....

6. Maybe so, but if a co. leases a copier, they could always demand the HD be erased in their presence"
beefore it's given back at the end of the lease.

8. I agree.
With this just now coming to light, I'm sure many will.

- But maybe "others" will also start looking at these old machines as a source of revenue......

5. When I chose to buy....
...a 4-in-1 copying system instead of continuing leasing a copier, they said they'd send someone for the old copier. That was almost two years ago. It's still sitting in our office. Clearly it is cheaper for the company to dump their old product lines off on me rather than to pick them up and dispose of it properly.

- So if they don't give a hoot about the copier, I know they don't care about what's on the hard drives. But I do.

11. I learned about this several years ago. I stopped using public/work copiers for anything sensitive.
You can get a combo printer/scanner/copier for less than a hundred bucks.

Unfortunately this does not stop others from using copiers for your records.

14. Kinkos is one thing....
...but think of all the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZQxMV-smXw">anonymous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6mM3ZNZyPM&NR=1">asses and http://www.metacafe.com/watch/710102/girl_prints_her_boobs_and_butt_with_copy_machine/">breasts that are also on all those hard drives too.

- Having a copy of someone's SSN is one thing. Having a copy of a picture of someone's junk is a whole nuther ball game.....
