One of my brothers was a career officer and I met large number of his fellow service officer and non-coms over the years. A Democrat was a rarity among them. The Service Academies are noted for their conservative vent along with conservative Christian values. The military, like the police, attract a certain type of mentality that equates authoritarianism with righteousness and liberalism with weakness of character. Unfortunately, many of the recruits are very young and impressionable and can be easily brainwashed by their superiors to accept conservatism as being synonymous with patriotism.

They fail to comprehend that this Republic was founded by men of the Enlightenment who were the most liberal thinkers of their time. They are totally unable to grasp the fact that the Constitution of the United States is one of the most progressive documents ever produced and along with Declaration of Independence the absolute rejection of conservative principles. Liberals by definition are not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas and are free from bigotry. They favor proposals for reform, are open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others. That is why I am a proud liberal why Republican by definition are the slim of the earth.

I've been in the Army for six years now and my experience is that the military is nothing more than a smaller version of our society as a whole, so I know liberals, and I know conservatives, and I know a few wing-nuts. The officer corps does appear to be pretty conservative however, and a few of the higher ranking NCO's are not very liberal, but all of us lower ranking guys outnumber them and are a better reflection of the society and the military. Fat boy is on AFN because the Pentagon gets to decide what's on AFN, I found it funny that out in Iraq at 12 noon they showed Countdown with Keith Olbermann when most of us were at lunch, and right after at one pm they showed Bill O'Reilly.

It's noticeable how Rush has ramped up the conspiracy-mongering. In the 1990s he frowned on that sort of thing and frequently derided it, although he was of course plenty right-wing. I wonder what changed. Perhaps he's feeling the heat of competition from the enthusiastic conspiracy-spinner Glenn Beck and now feels he has to contest that turf. Beck has done something noteworthy: he's brought to major media things that used to be mostly relegated to shortwave and some AM radio, such as hyperemotional conspiracy-spinning, mad theories, Oh my God, it's all coming down around us apocalypticism, posing as a savior figure, and pimping gold.
