For those of you who have not seen this yet, it's now on Countdown in its entirety. Lewis Black calls out Lonesome Rhodes Beck on The Daily Show for his hypocritical anger at the left for going Godwin on the right, after going Godwin on the left himself dozens of times. Or as Lewis put it, Glenn Beck has Nazi Tourettes!

16. I hope Black goes after that hopey-changey wink wink you betcha empty headed money grabber next
How about "No Fat Girls Allowed" even with ghost writing editors to the Palin Political Beauty Pageant so a "Queen" can be elected like they do in England, where they rule with the literal version of the Bible like Leviticus, so she can stone to death her daughter and Trig both... and all those who used her 'witch doctor"...including that doctor of hypocrisy -- John McCain.

Two ways to ruin a nation...McCain/Palin and the resulting congressional soap opera. Oh the gratitude of defeat. And to think here are those with such short memories they are ready to elect those from the unchanged party that nearly destroyed us simply because they now have more money with which to convince them. No matter what you believe those republicans are proven low-lives who don't understand policy or have the ability to do anything but what their lobbyists demand of them. It's "Mr. Christ" to them...and yes we have guns too especially after watching your insanity rethugs. When have repubs ever reached out, compromised, or did anything but insult and intimidate. Hell, the last administration belongs in prison so why would anyone want to elect more of them?

"We are all Georgians now"...(but certainly not all Afghans or Iraqis huh.).

41. I AM DEEPLY OFFENDED
I was one of the ones who Unrecommended this post.

As someone who has suffered from Tourette's Syndrome for most of my life, I find Mr. Black's comment highly insensitive and offensive.

We TS sufferers have no control over our tics. Would you ridicule people with Multiple Sclerosis or Cerebral Palsy? Or the blind, deaf or lame?

Put yourself in someone else's shoes.

63. I agree
Whilst it is unfortunate that an actual Tourette's sufferer was offended, it would be poison for a comedian to censor himself on the grounds that he might offend someone. At the same time, I don't think anyone has the right to tell that person that he shouldn't be offended.

Why are some things off limits and others not?

69. It depends on the context
Nothing should be off limits, and besides, Glenn Beck was the target of the joke, not Tourette's sufferers. It is not like Rush Limbaugh mocking Michael J Fox's Parkinson's Disease, because Lewis Black is not a fascist like Limbaugh, and doesn't regard disease as a sign of weakness.

86. I'd like to chime in here too.
I would have NO HESITATION in stating that Beck, or Limbaugh, or O'duncely, or Hannibal was/IS a "cancer" on society! I WILL concede that I might be unfairly slandering the affliction itself, but not making light of those afflicted with it.

rhetoric?

From what I've seen he doesn't, so the comparison is apt.

64. It could be a simple confluence of personality and career.
My first wife was a congenital liar. Literally. She lied when she had absolutely no reason to, and nothing to gain by it. She lied when the truth would be more beneficial to her. It destroyed her life, but it didn't have to. A mere 15 years later it could have been a career asset, if she were to work for Fox News.

Beck's weird paranoid view of the world would normally relegate him to blogging from his mother's basement, but by chance he happened into the one medium where it not only could be expressed but where he could build a career on it. If and when Fox collapses under its own weight, when Murdoch unloads it or dies, he will be out of a job, but Beck will continue to spout his nonsense. It is not something he does. It is what he is. Even if his end is friendless and alone, dying in an alcoholic stupor like his idol Joe McCarthy, he will keep doing it.

I don't think he really has an option. He is his pathology.

I would be offended too if someone compared me to Glenn Beck!

But. . .it really wasn't about you or people with Tourette syndrome!
You're right, tourette syndrome cannot be controlled. . .but Glenn Beck sure could control his speech!

Now, can you find it in yourself to find anything funny about this tirade??? I sure can!
How about if we remove the reference to "Tourette?"

Would that make it better?

80. The Raw Nerve
Responding to Black's turbo-satire with faux outrage is appropriate; you screech like he called you out personally.

I dissent from your alleged wounding. The point here, aside from the obvious one of censorship, is intent. Was Lewis Black out to tar your illness with broad strokes? Nope. It was a one-liner. Could most people reading this thread claim some sensitivity about jokes? Surely, but let's not go ruling out puns on divorce, kids, rednecks, professors, men, women, or teabaggers. Early in his career, Adam Sandler had an awesome rant on comedy and sensitized groups. I wish I could find it for posting. In short, please get a grip. You'll live...for a while, anyway, just like the rest of us.

Putting yourself in someone else's shoes is great advice. Think of the metric tons of damage the Glennster has done to everyday discourse in this benighted land. Even if it cost an extremely insensitive remark (or two!) to take him down a few notches, would it be worthwhile? I hope so, because freedom of (some) speech is all we have left.

Yes, I would mock the medical conditions of multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, blindness, deafness, mobility impairment, halitosis, dengue fever, the yaws . . . Which is not synonymous with mocking people who suffer from those conditions.

It's called humor. It has a bit of a sting. And Black is very good at it.

46. Indeed...
I must say that last week I decided to check out what the hoopla was all about, and I watched Beck's show for the first (and last time). After less than 5 minutes of seeing that buffoon in action, it is clear that a) the train has long left the station of Beck's mind, and b) his story is not going to end well.

The spectacle of watching his hand picked guests nod and smile in agreement to each of Beck's insane and nonsensical statements/analysis was too much to handle, and I had to switch the channel before brain rot claimed another victim.

Good grief.

Looky, I can play the Glenn Beck game, too!

Ya know, one of the reasons Hitler invaded Russia was to get at their oil supply, kinda like we did with Iraq . . . twice! Oh, wait, that would equate Bush/Cheney with Hitler. Beck wouldn't do that. That comparison would outrage Beck. How dare I!

56. another myth
http://www.naturalnews.com/025163_Hitler_vegetarian_vegetarianism.html

Myth Busted: Hitler Was Not a Vegetarian

(NaturalNews) It's common knowledge that Hitler was a vegetarian. Just ask anybody: They'll tell you so. Trouble is, the assumption is false. Hitler wasn't a vegetarian at all. Consider the historical facts:

• Biographers who wrote about Hitler (and who knew him quite well on a personal basis) openly describe his love for Bavarian sausages and game pie ("game" meaning wild meat from birds and other creatures).

• Hitler's own chef openly talked about Hitler's love for stuffed pigeon.

• In none of Hitler's speeches or writing did Hitler state he was a vegetarian or speak in favor of vegetarianism.

• Hitler was regularly given injections of a protein serum made from the testicles of a bull -- not exactly a treatment that would be tolerated by vegetarians.

• None of Hitler's lieutenants were vegetarians, nor was vegetarianism promoted in any way in the Nazi party.

In fact, Hitler suffered from severe flatulence (where do you think the idea for the gas chambers came from?) and was advised by doctors to follow a vegetarian diet from time to time in order to calm the gas attacks. This is probably where the myth about Hitler being a vegetarian first originated. No doubt his lieutenants wanted Hitler to be a vegetarian; especially the ones seated closest to him at the dinner table.

Additional reading about the Hitler vegetarianism myth: http://www.vegsource.com/berry/hitl...

By the way, according to the above-mentioned article, the New York Times' definition of vegetarianism includes cooked ham. I suppose if you define vegetarianism as including cooked ham and sausages, then sure, Hitler was a vegetarian. But you'd have to be a numbskull to adopt that definition in the first place.

Speaking of myths about Hitler, it turns out Hitler wasn't an atheist, either. As he stated himself in Mein Kampf (1925): "I am convinced that I am acting as the agent of our Creator. By fighting off the Jews, I am doing the Lord's work."

Nazi soldiers wore belt buckles with the inscription Gott mit uns (God is with us), and they routinely engaged in religious blessings of the troops by invoking the power of God at the Catholic Church.

Hitler wasn't a vegetarian, but he was a Catholic (http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl...).

Does this mean anything to us today? Nope. Opponents of vegetarianism or atheism are always pointing to Hitler as an example "proving" how wrong-headed those philosophies are, but it's just meaningless talk. I just pointed out that Hitler was actually a meat-eating Catholic. Does that mean that all meat eaters and Catholics are evil? Of course not.

Hitler spoke German, too. Does that mean all German-speaking people are evil? Of course not.

The truth is that one person's actions, no matter how insane, do not represent the philosophies of entire groups to which he may momentarily belong.

The valid comparisons between modern-day politicians and Hitler should, in my view, focus on the use of fear to promote war, the use of staged false-flag attacks to incite anger among the population, and the use of empty oration to create a loyalist following that dangerously concentrates political power into the hands of the few. Hitler was also in favor of gun confiscation, gold confiscation and eugenics programs, all of which are highly relevant in the modern world. And it goes without saying that he placed no value on the lives of many humans -- a view shared today by most multinational corporations.

On the other hand, as some will no doubt point out, Hitler was the chief force behind the building of Germany's autobahn highway system, and he helped push through the first Volkswagon "car for the masses" that made automobile transportation affordable. Looking carefully at history shows that even the most evil, dangerous men can easily frame their actions as accomplishments for the People. This is highly relevant to remember as our own President Bush is attempting to reframe his legacy today.

One thing for sure is that Bush was no vegetarian.

Only in the sense that he occasionally claimed to be; many witnesses attested to him eating liver, Bavarian sausages and stuffed squab (young pigeon). The latter was said to be his favorite dish by a restaurant that he attended regularly in the 1930s.

According to Robert Payne (Hitler's biographer), the vegetarian claim was made up by Goebbels to give the impression of an ascete in the manner of Ghandi; Goebbels claimed that Hitler did not smoke, drink, eat meat or have anything to do with women. In fact, it is known he did all of these -- except smoke.

So, apart from his many other faults, Hitler was also dishonest about his diet.

Hitler was actually not a vegetarian at all. That is a myth. Rynn Berry an educator and historian wrote a pamphlet about this and later expanded it into a book.

I read in a book that he indeed was a vegetarian, for a short time, but that was for a public relations campaign to display himself as "pure". Then he stopped, since it's impssible for a cold-blooded killer to make decisions to save lives if you know what i mean.

Hitler's doctor recommended that he cut down on the amount of meat he ate, which he did to a small extent, Goebbels started the story that Hitler didn't smoke, drink, eat meat or have anything to do with women (its well attested that Hitler did all of these apart from smoke).
Hitler was not a vegetarian. He has been recorded eating meat throughout his life and only occasionally refused meat at a meal because his doctor advised.

87. I'm with you on this!
I just watched it the THIRD time, and was still hootin' and hollering like I did the FIRST time I saw it. These comics are DECIMATING the "Right" like no train-load of truth ever could! We need Stewart, Colbert, Black and others on the floor in the senate and the house. Whenever someone of the Right speaks, one of these comics would step up and blow chasms in the hypocrisy of what passes for conservatism these days!

Gawd, I didn't think I could hate these assholes more than I did before I watched that clip.

92. He didn't even bring up Beck's fight against social justice - telling people to leave any
church or organization that fights for social justice. I guess social justice is just as horrible as ... empathy. :wow:

I adore Lewis Black & caught this first in one of my midnight insomnia attacks. I almost fell out of the bed laughing. Then downloaded it in the a.m. & caught it again on Keith. I'll only play it a few hundred more times before the weekend:)

59. How does anyone take Beck seriously?
It makes me very sad to think of the level of ignorance/stupidity required to actually believe anything that idiot says.

That said, Black is freakin hilarious in his skewering of the idiotic blowhard. :)

83. This is the kind of calling out/outrage we need to see more of.
Just like Keith, we need folks to be telling it like it is -- loud, pointed, funny, and angry. To Obama, Congress, the oil companies, and most of all, the mainstream media lap dogs that purport to be covering "the news".
