1. This ex-cop said the same thing
back in 1975. Anyone with a lick of sense knew the "drug war" was a loser all around... With legalization you at least have some chance to control the game and you can almost completely take it out of the hands of criminals...

4. This "marijuana is a gateway drug" business is antiquated thinking.
and there's a ton of evidence out there that disproves it.
Simply put, 9 out of 10 heroin users may have started out smoking pot, but 9 out of 10 pot smokers do not end up using heroin- the claims of all the 1950s drug scare films we were shown in high school not withstanding.

5. There is an organization for law-enforcement personnel -
Edited on Sun May-16-10 01:34 AM by Mike K
- who want to see marijuana legalized.

Go here: http://www.leap.cc/cms/index.php

Join it and support them because their very existence is a powerful statement (not necessary to contribute any money).

My son-in-law is about to retire at the rank of lieutenant from the NYCPD and he feels that officers making marijuana arrests is counterproductive because it removes them from patrol where their presence is more useful in dealing with real crime. He can't say that outright but he lets his patrol sergeants know how he feels about it.

Support L.E.A.P.

7. Interesting: Drug war hurts the police force most.
A little self-absorbed, but a good tack on the war against the failed and fraudulent war on drugs.

14. Yea...I don't agree with this
It has clearly hurt the public much more than the police. Even though, to be fair, officers have lost their lives in this war as well. I also think people should be careful when they say they want to legalize drugs. Some viewers may think you're talking about all drugs including heroin, crack cocaine, meth, etc...the worse ones that certainly are as bad as people say they are. This is a trojan horse because most Americans don't want those drugs legal. The argument should stick to marijuana.

8. Prohibition already failed once before
Like the Pentagon budget, the War on (untaxed) Drugs is nothing but very narrowly targeted, very inefficient, economic stimulus.

Incarcerating so many people keeps lots of others employed from the alphabet soup of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to the prison-industrial complex, etc. Those interest groups have their hands out like any other. It's a wonder when (if?) anything positive and rational is passed in Congress that's not brazenly corporate-friendly. Any "progress" is agonizingly slow.

To paraphrase Bill Hicks: it's not a war on drugs, it's a war on personal freedom.

11. "A war on personal freedom" --- Exactly . . . !!
Edited on Sun May-16-10 12:24 PM by defendandprotect
It's a right wing effort to create a more violent American, to create fear of

one citizen for another --

and, especially to imprison anyone of color -- that's clear re Nixon's agenda --

made clear by Ehrlichman.

And it's worked well for the right wing -- how many African Americans imprisoned now!!?????

12. The issues of Drug War Industry and Prison Industry have to come together . . .
in this fight --

African Americans and other people of color have long recognized that this is

a war on their communities --

Begin with the weakest -- that's how the right wing works!
