The TSA Bullies, The Border Control Gestapo.... how much tighter do the Tea Baggers and Arizona Brown Shirts want to control the borders? How about Instant Firing Squads?

This is the way we spend Federal Dollars to treat our Neighbors In Canada...?

George Bush and the Neocons unleashed to most horrible scurge of fascism (dressed up as Homeland Security) this country has even known.

3. I cross the border from Canada into the US in both directions often and this
is very common crossing into the US for Canadian citizens and those with dual citizenship. I hate crossing that border for this reason and I wish Obama would do something to rectify this. It certainly does not inspire Canadians to come down to the US for shopping or otherwise.

4. I wonder if these Border Guards are related to the Detroit Cops....
.. the ones who kicked in the door of a wrong apartment and shot a 7 year-old-girl while she slept?

6. In all honesty, they guy was kinda mouthy...
And the second interviewer border guy was polite, although fishing for excuses to detain him. Anybody knows that these guys have all the cards, and being snappy at them is asking for a detour into the office. When I cross the border, I give them only the answers they ask for, and keep it short. Most of these border guards on both sides love to make your life miserable if you're the least bit smartass with them. I crossed the border going up and coming back last summer in my VW bus with Grateful Dead stickers on it, and sure enough, they pulled me into the "lane" both coming and going. I just sat there and kept my mouth shut while they snooped through my bus, and only spoke up when they pulled out my $4000 guitar. I politely told them how much it was worth, and could they be please careful, and I would loosen the strings for them if they wanted to look inside. They eventually got bored after noticing I had co-operated, and sent me on my way.

8. I agree with you, but I still think that US border people in general have far to much power.
This is a direct cause by the Bush Administration for sure. What the border people should have done right up front IMO is turn this couple back if they felt that they needed to.

"When I cross the border, I give them only the answers they ask for, and keep it short."
I totally agree with you on this point, do not volunteer anything.

10. I don't know when it happened...
Maybe it was the Bush era, but as far as I remember, they have always had almost absolute power at the border. More than Cops, and all other law enforcement combined. I asked a Canadian border guard about that and he confirmed it.They one thing they complained about, is that they don't have enough firepower should a well armed bunch of yahoos storm the border, at least not on the Canadian side at small crossings. And I agree with you about turning them back, they should have just said, OK turn it around and git on back. The guy seemed to be baiting them all along, otherwise, why was he recording it? Seems he was fishing for a reaction .. well, he got it..

15. I answer their questions with a smile
but not 100% true,

where will you be staying (as my daughter is french they can ask this)

so i say either at my parents or my grandparents house, they ask for the address and I give them both saying i dont know which place because one has a huge back yard for my girl to play in, when they see 2 addresses in the same town they have always dropped the issue. US border agents are seen as ogres by many people here in the European Union and I find that EU border agents ask similar questions, but smile more, and try to diffuse situations instead of trying to get to a stand off.

24. Funny...I'm Canadian...
And I get the shit going INTO Canada, hell, they don't even check me coming into the US. Probably because I'm legal, and they don't think I'm stupid enough to do something illegal to jeopardize my status, which is true. I think the Canucks kinda resent me being able to lve down here. They always ask if I have guns and ammo going up there, and coming back the US side asks me if I have Cuban Cigars!

7. I grew up on the US/Canadian border. Went back & forth hundreds of times.
The Canadian Customs people were always real nice, and the US Customs agents were always assholes.

That was in the late 50's/early 60s, way before 9/11 and the big "war on terror". It must be really fucked now.

9. This is not right.. arrogant..psychopath control-freak guards....
This is the same attitude we get from the TSA at every Airport Terminal, train and bus station.

It's a sad day when travelers have to keep their mouth shut and look straight ahead to keep from being tasered or beat with a club. Or worse yet..shot.

These guards are not protecting anyone from terrorism... they are too busy looking in the mirror and admiring their shiny Federal Badges. (which by the way.. we all pay for via our taxes).

17. they hae TSA in train stations and bus terminals in the USA?
for real I took greyhound before 911 (back when you could get on a domestic flight with some weed in your pocket) and took the bus with no tsa agents. Here in France the only place you go through metal detectors is the plane, trais adverties that they are easier because there is no baggage security check.

Retreating is now an offensive tactic?

26. It is not just the USA
Guards are like this outside of the USA as well. Heck, it is not just border guards. I have been at libraries where the security guard stopped a pregnant lady from drinking a cup of water to show off how much power he had. Let's face it, this guy was asking for trouble.

12. The guy made some valid points but he was looking for trouble.
I had the same kind of questions about specific locations where I would be going the last time I went to the UK. The questioning tactics are not not specific to that guy.

I am not convinced that the border with Canada needs to be as tight as it has become. It would probably be possible to lighten up a little on both sides without really sacrificing anybody's National security. I am actually more comfortable visiting the UK or France than Canada. It should not be that way.

I also kind of miss being able to cross the river into Mexico. 20 years ago I could just cross the river and have a beer or soda in a border village. Now we have to go to crossings and it is just not worth the hassle.

I went through Texas border patrol check points 4 or 5 times last month and they were all extremely professional an pleasant to deal with.

13. I don't like the tone of that whole event. Handled badly.
I agree the guy was mouthy, but the federal whoever-they-are were overly poised for a confrontation. I understood the Canadian guy's shock. My mouth fell open listening... jaw-dropping, incredulous...

There's GOT to be a better way to handle it.

How did we get a copy of the encounter? Who taped it?

19. what happened next?
First, the claim of "three terrorists" a day is pure BS. If this was true, it'd be on the news and right wingers would be spinning themselved into the ground out of pure joy. Second, the first "agent" obviously had a hard on for the Canadian guy.

I used to have so much trouble coming across the border on airlines, I used to commute to Montreal from Austin by auto. I consulted on design of blast resistant and ballistic resistant and fire rated window, door and wall systems.

Funny how we can catch all the innocent coming in but not guys who only wanted to learn how to fly airliners but not how to take off or land them. And how many of them were origionly trained and armed by the CIA in Afghanistan.

20. I wouldn't let that prick in the country if I was the border guard
What a jerk. Making an issue over being asked to take a seat? Demanding a reason for being asked to take a seat? WTF? Some rich kid with an inflated sense of entitlement. He thinks the guards should just trust him, why? because he's such a great guy? Because he looks like a privileged white kid?

25. Sorry, no sympathy here, but the guy just sounds an asshole in the mood to show off
Edited on Thu May-20-10 03:50 AM by TheEuclideanOne
I listened to about the first 5 minutes and couldn't listen to this guy anymore. Maybe I am the only one. But if I was one of the border guards and had to ask some basic questions as part of my job and got challenged on just about anything that I asked, I would not be as patient as some of these guards. In fact, this guy is so full of himself that he thinks that everybody will listen to this video and just automatically take his side and share this video because they would be so amazed at how unfairly he was being treated.

I have traveled to a number of other countries and if I was asked questions by any of the border guards, and acted like this guy, I hardly think they would be as patient as these guards. At least these guys tried to explain some things to them. The guy acted as though he was so important because he worked with people like the guards all the time. Try going to any country and refuse to answer questions because you just decided that they were stupid questions. See how far that gets you.
