VERY COOL: Flash Opera at Detroit's Eastern Market

With all the bad news coming out of Detroit lately, I wanted to post this. It's "political" only in the sense that it shows the power of the arts to help people forget -- if only for a short time -- their problems and share a transcendent moment.

This happened at the annual Flower Day at Detroit's Eastern Market.

Arts funding is a luxury we can't afford? How can we afford NOT to fund the arts?

2. Well intended, but hard to tell about the execution...

I only saw about 4 people who seemed to be participating, probably due to the lousy camera work... and does lip synching count? I guess it did in Ferris Bueller's Day off.

Maybe some better video will surface?

3. Lip synching?

I should have posted the caption:

"Michigan Opera Theatre singers and chorus surprise Flower Day attendees at Detroit's Eastern Market on May 16, 2010."

Those folks were not lip synching.

7. Yeah, I realize they were opera singers

but I don't know... to me, it doesn't seem to add up.

At the end of the video, you see that the camera is about 50 yards away from the two or three primary singers that are visible -- the orchestra is obviously recorded, and the voices seem to be coming through the same amplification. The acoustics of an open air market from that distance are not going to sound like an opera house, no matter how talented the singers.

Maybe the audio was recorded off camera closer to the singers and synced up later to the awful video, but it would have made sense to put the camera person there, too. Or maybe the performers had microphones that were coming through the same amplification as the recorded orchestra. Or maybe they're singing along to a recording, and if you were nearby, you would hear the singers, but the camera person was closer to some speaker that had the recording.

Get CSI Detroit on this right away. I want ANSWERS!
