The beaches have, but the salt marshes are ruined as will be the Gulf marshes.

11. Whether or not the salt marshes have been ruined |
|
that doesn't excuse them from listening to what Papantonio has to say and trying the method of deploying the tankers.
They could also listen to what he has to say about getting on the bully pulpit - Obama is guilty of trying to employ ordinary same-old, same-old, Washintonian-ese methods in an extraordinary situation.
And I agree with him - SCREW Axelrod....one of many corporate hacks that I'm tired of hearing from.

12. The problem is that a lot of the oil is too deep |
|
When a tanker spills oil, the oil stays on the surface, making it easy to siphon.
Since the oil is coming from a subsurface leak and not a tanker spill, the majority of it is below the level where a tanker can suck it up.
I'd say siphon as much surface oil as you can, but don't expect miracles.

The tankers are full, mostly sitting offshore as 'storage' when they manipulate the oil inventories to increase pressure on the price of oil.
They don't unload until inventories hit that magical 'constrained' value bump. So it's not like they have a bunch of empty tankers sitting about to do anything with.

19. Sure, but why bother? |
|
The government isn't putting their feet to the fire, so let the speculators drive up the price of oil a bit, makes it easier for BP to pay for the fines and cleanup and all that.
Besides, nobody wants seawater contaminated oil mucking up the inside of a tanker, sheesh.
It's like you thought they had an interest in the environment.

16. Damn Right... BP has to be responsible |
|
And they MUST bring those tankers to the Gulf. I thought about the pressure gradient thing, and it's plausible. The oil is under so much pressure, that in order to plug it up, you have to exert equal or greater pressure to contain it. At about a mile underwater, it's a lot of pressure. I don't think that there's the technology to do this at this point in time. Yeah, we could pressurize concrete and inject into the hole, but the opposing pressure would be too great, because it's the pressure of a mile of water PLUS whatever is coming up out of the ground. Therefore I have to agree with Pap, in that they are NOT going to be able to plug this one. Not until the well runs "dry," or the pressure equalizes.
