AP: OBAMA'S RIGHT ON CIVILIAN CASUALTIES

from NBC's Mark Murray

As we predicted this morning, this Obama statement yesterday regarding Afghanistan -- "We've got to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there" -- drew a response from the Republicans. "It is hard to imagine that anyone who aspires to be commander-in-chief would say such a thing about our brave men and women in uniform," RNC chairman Mike Duncan said today in a statement. "Obama owes our armed forces an apology -- today.”

Yet the AP has this fact-check: "A check of the facts shows that Western forces have been killing civilians at a faster rate than the insurgents ... As of Aug. 1, the AP count shows that while militants killed 231 civilians in attacks in 2007, Western forces killed 286. Another 20 were killed in crossfire that can't be attributed to one party."

1. Well we didn't kill enough Vietnamese either
that's why we lost there, doncha know. So I'm not surprised they don't see a problem with bombing civilians as a war strategy in Afghanistan either.

2. Jesus! What can I say?
I try to think this kind of behavior is rare and that our guys wear white hats and heroically make the best of an awful situation, but I've seen a bunch of stuff like this the last few years and the effect is cumulative. I think maybe heroes are in the minority and guys like those in the video are the norm.

Maybe I missed something in the video, but it looked to me like these guys murdered at least 2 likely innocent people and were as excited and thrilled as 10 year olds winning a little league game. All I can do is shake my head. It's very sad.

I hope someone can point out that my take on the video is all wrong. I really do.
