There's plenty of money to pay Carlyle, Halliburton, Boeing, Xe, etc. These are the same swines that started the pre-emptive Iraq war, and assumed for budgetary purposes that the cost would be zero. They cut taxes during the war (the first time this occurred in world history, according to Paul Krugman). Their buddies are making billions from our tax dollars right now. They screamed 'Support the Troops!' at everyone who didn't support the Iraq and Afghan debacles.
But now, when it's time to help support the troops, we need to make sure it is paid for, don't want to run any deficits. Because the repugs are hard-headed realists, and fiscal watch-dogs. It's their raison d'etre.
Historical run-down on the national debt: Every president, up to and including Jimmy Carter: less than 1 trillion dollars added to the national debt, all told. Bill Clinton: 1.7 trillion dollars added to the national debt, in 8 years (but left the nation with a projected surplus of 5.5 trillion dollars, over 10 years. That 5.5 trillion is the money W. bush and Greenspan used to excuse the repugs' multi-trillion dollar tax cuts). GHW bush: 1 trillion added to the national debt, in 4 years. RW Reagan: 2 trillion added to the national debt. W. bush: More than 5.7 trillion added to the national debt, not counting the cost of both wars, treatment of vets, and the huge bailouts to clean up the financial mess his deregulation caused.
Anyone keeping a tally can see that between St. Ronnie and the bushes, the repugs have added close to 9 trillion dollars to the national debt through deficit spending and tax cuts, since 1981. Every other president in US history, combined, has added 3.5 trillion dollars. Three pig repugs have nearly tripled the amount owed by the other 41 presidents. I forget what the rest of the repugs were saying about the debt, when the last 3 repug pig presidents were in office. Surely it was consistent and not hypocritical.
