Jim Garlow played a central role in the passage of Proposition 8 and was, not surprisingly, outraged by the court decision striking it down, claiming that it would lead to polygamy and bestiality. http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/prop-8-engle-calls-it-end-democracy-while-garlow-warns-bestiality

Alan Colmes had Garlow on his program on Friday night to discuss that claim and Garlow stood by it, claiming that the language in the decision could ultimately be used to defend polygamy though he seemed to back off from the bestiality language a bit, claiming that Colmes had taken half of a quote and presented it out of context (of course, Colmes did nothing of the sort, as Garlow http://mobile.sandiego6.com/news/local/story/Prop-8-Supporters-Appeal-Gay-Marriage-Court-Ruling/Rq9hHxtr-Uy6PG6NfO8kvQ.cspx made the same bestiality comparison on more than one occasion.)

Eventually, the debate turned to the topic of religious freedom, with Garlow insisting that gay marriage would mean that doctors, businesses, and everyone else would have to recognize them under penalty of law, which prompted Colmes to ask Garlow if he was saying that people ought to be able to freely discriminate, which is exactly the view that recently got Rand Paul in trouble, to which Garlow replied "racism is wrong, and marriage is a good thing" and insisted that he has every right to take his religious views into the voting booth and "vote from a Biblical standpoint the same way that you have a right to vote from an anti-Biblical standpoint":

Those who want to know more about Garlow's opposition to the ruling can read this lengthy blog post http://www.skylinechurch.org/skyline/?p=2267 he wrote slamming it or watch this eleven minute video he released doing the same thing:

1. Go back to school
This guy is a tool. He argues that the judge should not have the power to overturn the 7 million people who voted to approve Proposition 8, but his argument is flawed because judges have the responsibility to overturn unconstitutional laws and this includes referendums. For instance, if Mississippi had a referendum to segregate a minority, the courts would assuredly strike down the law. We the people does not mean tyranny of the majority.

4. I got 2 minutes in before the bigotry became unbearable.
I agree with the idea that I've seen elsewhere - people's rights are not up for a vote! Would the pastor like it if his First Amendment rights were voted away in a referendum?

5. Thankyou for posting this
Garlow is a very good political player and scientist...he was on Alan Colmes the other night and even knew what Alan was going to ask. Alan did nail him on a couple of things.

but the key thing is I think Garlow and the like are more interested in a war of culture than winning this case...he was asked to testify and he did not but low and behold he has tons to say about it now.

6. Garlow? How many southerners would have voted for not allowing
civil rights to blacks back in the sixties? If this guy is a man of God, why doesn't he want people to be happy? Do you know what really bothers him? I do.
