Anyone with half a brain need listen to that charlatan for only a few days before realizing she is the equivalent of a snake oil salesman - and she gives some extremely questionable advice.

3. I'm in two minds about this-

I do agree that there's a double standard. If it's offensive when white people say it, it should be offensive when black people say it. Period. I can think of no other word that will get one group of people in so much trouble while another can throw it around freely.

I also believe that black people are over-sensitive about it any-time-in-any-context. There are a lot of contexts in which the speaker is not using it to refer to a person or group of people. Do we have to be so PC all the time?

Finally black people do need to understand that when they use it, they are allowing right wingers and racists to feel justified in their own use of it. I agree that black people need to quit using it if they want white people to stop.

Now with regard to this particular incident, I think "Dr" Laura made excessive and unapologetic use of it, and while she may not have called the caller a n*gger, she used it in a highly unsympathetic way, and her apology the next day rings pretty hollow with me. She deserved to have consequences for it, and the fact that she's going off the air doesn't bother me, since I think she had no business being on the air in the first place.

4. The other side of the double standard

As a white person, there is really nothing that a black person can call me that is as offensive as the one thing I can call him. No "cracker", "honkey", "whitey", "mo...fo..." no matter how offensively hurled, can compare to the hundreds of years of humiliation that can be served up were I to let loose with THE choice expletive. That's why you strike it from your vocabulary, even in the case of "reported speech" (which was supposed to be Dr. Laura's cover).

6. Just to be clear, I'm not defending "Dr" Laura's use of it.

She used it in a highly insensitive manner, even if it was not directed at the caller. But I do maintain that if black people find it so offensive, they shouldn't use it either- I know most black people don't, but when any of them do, it's an excuse for bigots to continue using it.
