to appear moderate in comparison, which helps those candidates appeal to independents.

So Bolton can't possibly win, but if he runs I think it could indirectly help other candidates on the right.

He can say crazy things attacking the left, as a surrogate for their other candidates, and because he's in the race, the media will cover it.

If he runs and the conservative base loves him, and makes him their fave, it might make the other Repukes in the primaries swing further to the right to compete with him. The further right they swing, the more they turn off everyone else. It just depends on how much even the base can stomach.
