At the Santa Fe New Mexico Opening of Countdown to Zero Wilson explains how she got involved with the film, how nuclear proliferation is an issue of national security, how nuclear weapons are not a deterrent against current threats and in fact contributes to that threat. She suggests that global nuclear disarmament may be difficult but is necessary as an eventual goal. The video was shot by John Witham for Nuclear Watch New Mexico, part of the CTZ Campaign Alliance.

1. I suppose it's too much to ask that this become an election issue.

Negotiations with other countries have begun, Obama is very supportive, and it's possible that the Senators being elected in November will see a vote on a nuclear disarmament treaty.

2. I think they're trying to keep it bipartisan
I also see a lot of resistance here on DU, some here even want every country armed with nukes because they think that would deter all wars.

3. I'm surprised there is resistance on DU
Sorry I missed the RE: until now. Somehow I just didn't see it.

I agree it wouldn't be good for this cause if the parties took opposed and entrenched positions, but I've thought for some time that the issue made a good Obama/Democratic campaign stance because of the bipartisan nature, the long-term security and budget benefit, and the better position it puts us in with Iran. The likely division it would cause within the Republican Party(ex-Reaganites v. extremists) would be a bonus.

But I'd forgotten, attempted rationality during a campaign year is more often a curse.
