Every religion has it's extremist elements. Moderate Muslims are being portrayed in disgusting ways by the right for political gain. There are plenty of white, racist self-proclaimed Christians who would like to see other races re-segregated and every Hispanic shipped out of the country. This is nothing more than blind ignorance, and every religion has plenty of them. I don't prescribe to any religion; I'm an Athiest. But I know plenty of MODERATE Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc., who do not match the criteria of your broad stroke view you are clinging to. What you also fail to understand is that there are PLENTY of women who have absolutely no problem living in some of these oppressive conditions brought on by extremism, despite the fact that you and I can agree that we see this as oppressive because of our own cultural backgrounds.

Heard on NPR a few days ago a show about Islam and they said it was the first major religion which allowed women to vote and own land, something unheard of in any culture or religion back in the dark ages.
