"One thing I'm absolutely confident of is we're gonna have a lot of close races, decided by just a few dozen votes, a few hundred votes, in Senate races, House races, governors races. And so what we all do over the next 50 something days is going to make the difference, and turn races we might lose by 51-49 into wins by 51-49...

"We're gonna have a lot of races decided by just a sliver of votes. And the work you do can make a difference."

1. Glad to see this
The dems definitely have their shit together when it comes to their GOTV operation this year. I have already been volunteering for the past few months and will be doing so even more over the next 2. As everyone knows we kill the republicans when it comes to voter registration, we just have to get out there and convince those people to show up.

2. If the Democrats really want to win in November, Obama needs
to come out and clearly state that he will not sign a bill that might cut Social Security or raise the retirement age.

I have spent many hours over the course of my life working for the Democratic Party and the things that I believed that the Democrats stood for. A reliable, strong system of Social Security is a first priority. I need it for my mother. I need it for myself. I need it so that my children can raise their children without having full responsibility for supporting us, their parents.

Especially in the wake of this economic downturn, promising not to touch Social Security or Medicare is the first priority. Older people vote, and many will be deciding whether to vote and then how to vote based on the parties' promises regarding Social Security.

This could be a winning issue for Democrats. It could make all the difference for Democrats.

Social Security is the lifeline for millions of seniors.

That Obama did not make it clear to the Cat Food Commission BEFORE HE APPOINTED IT that they could not consider cuts to Social Security is just shameful. How does he think older people will provide for themselves without Social Security and Medicare? The government will have to pay their room and board out of the general funds.

Social Security is the bottom line. David Plouffe --- it's up to you and Obama.

15. Getting people who are older on Social Security and assuaging
their fear of being penniless if Social Security benefits are cut will help younger people get jobs. There aren't enough jobs for younger people. The worst thing to do would be to cut Social Security and force a lot of older, retired people living on low incomes back into the job market.

So Social Security and jobs are two sides of the same issue.

18. Our capitalist system which rules our economy is at the end of the day a game of confidence
Having a strong SS in place, gives people confidence, and confident workers make confident customers, which in turn generate confident product demand, which in turn...

So yeah, it is the "economy stupid" but it should not be the stupid talking the economy.

this as well. Regardless of what you think of them, they have a direct line to millions of seniors who listen to them. He would do well to have them on his side regarding SS and MC.

Edited to say I meant to reply to JDP. (Sorry 'bout that)

37. Sasquuatch55, that's brilliant! Since the 2-party system is actually written into our constitution
Edited on Sun Sep-12-10 03:18 PM by breadandwine
all you have to do is go find yourself another country to live in and you'll be good to go!

We have district voting in America. Congressional districts and state races for senators. That means that whoever gets 51% wins. This naturally forces voters to make compromises both in November and in primaries because if you are a purist who can't get to 50% all you are doing is helping the worse candidate win.

The only way to get rid of the 2-party system is to have parliamentary voting which would require huge constitutional changes.

Unless you are planning to move to a parliamentary democracy in Scandinavia where a party getting 12% gets 12% of parliament you're stuck.

But I am excited by your CREATIVE solution!

What a wonderful way to travel! What a MARVELOUS way to go on vacation!

Just quit the 2-party system and you'll be forced to live in another country!

Give up your friends!

Give up the shopping centers you're familiar with, the products you know!

Give up your relatives!

Give up the transportation systems you've come to know!

Give up your job references, skills and domestic training!

Give up your home, your mortgage, your community!

Give up English and learn to speak Magyar by Tuesday!

Give up the alphabet and learn the Cyrillic alphabet! I'm sure your new employer will find you very literate after you've taken a correspondence course!

Give up your whole F*CKING life and go move to another country!

BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!

And this we did not even know.

What an incredible way to solve problems!

Just give up on this whole country and go move to Moldova!!!!!!!

Nobecauseyousee, Moldova is the key to solving global warming.

Nobecauseyousee, the fate of the world depends on the policies of the world's sole surviving superpower --- Moldova!!!!!!

Nobecauseyousee, it was a sacrifice but somebody had to go live in a place where the eyes of the world look to for leadership, that mighty nation -- Denmark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great idea. Give up on the 2-party system, AKA who cares about voting?

Voting STINKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Millions of people, women, African Americans, fought and even paid with their lives for the right to vote but YOU? You know better!!!!!

Voting is for A*SHOLES!

I'd rather play Monopoly than go out and vote........

10. We have to get the young and minority voters out again! This time
for real in many major House Contests. The Senate will lose a few, but stay above 50, as long as we work damn hard to get out the young and minority voters once again as we did in 2008.

The vote overwhelmingly for Dems.

Here is a link to Progressive Dems of America's Calender of Events page. There's no event currently for Warren area, but you can check for dates that you are available:

https://www.thedatabank.com/dpg/309/mtglist.asp?formid=meet&mtgview=L

Progressive Democrats of America is a grassroots PAC that works both inside the Democratic Party and outside in movements for peace and justice. PDA's advisory board includes seven members of Congress and activist leaders such as Tom Hayden, Medea Benjamin, Thom Hartmann, Jim Hightower, and Lila Garrett.

Here is an online action opportunities link from Emily's List, if you can't get any non-electronic opportunities nearby:

http://emilyslist.org/20100907_teamemily/

I looked up your state Dem Committeepeople in The Pennsylvania Manual, but the most recent edition I have is '07 - '08, so this info might be outdated, but for what it's worth:

Bernard & Linda Hessley, 218 Conewango Ave., Warren 16365 (Bernard listed as Warren's Chair)
Randall Peterson, 1 E. Valley View Dr., Russell 16345

I don't know if you have any involvement with organized labor, but we are doing door-to-door and phonebank outreach starting this Saturday. Send an e-mail here to get info:

16. I think you should volunteer
This election isn't about being upset with dems and thinking you have to punish them, punishing the dems is the equivalent of punching yourself in the face. This election is about keeping the repubs from taking back the house and senate and in order to do that, we need every liberal in this country to mobilize in a big way. I am probably as upset as you are with this administration but the fact of the matter is, having the dems in power is better than having the repubs in power. I will gladly volunteer much of my time over the next 2 months. The words "Speaker John Boehner" is enough to make me get of my ass and do everything I possibly can. The fact is if the repubs take power the next 2 years are a wash and I really cannot afford to let that happen, my livelihood depends on this economy making a turn for the better and with the repubs in power that is not going to happen.

21. Um, what about sugesting some things that might motivate us?
You know, like how you appointed a liberal to be Obama's CoS, and how he didn't call us all effin retards? Oh, wait, that didn't happen. How about when the President fired Alan Simpson for claiming Social Security recipients were sucking on tits? Oh, that didn't happen, either. Or how about when the President defend Shirley Sherrod from right wing lies and didn't take Breitbart at his word? Oh, right, the administration got pwned by Breitbart. OK, how about how the administration stuck to its guns in defense of single-payer health care reform? Oh, that was negotiated away at the very beginning, and then the insurance industry sent letters to policyholders claiming that premium increases were due to health care reform, even though it will be a moneymaker for them and the real changes don't take place until 2014, too late for many who will die because the administration got punked.

I'm sorry, what was this about, again? Oh, it was about me going door to door talking to hostile strangers rather than spending time with my young children. What's my incentive, here? What are you going to do, close Gitmo prison? No. End the Iraq War? No, 50,000 combat troops still there on an endless occupation. Prosecute Bush war criminals? No, they get a pass.

OK, I'm game to knock on a few doors. But you still need to do better.

Frankly, Obama and his cohorts don't care. They are serving the corporate interests and will continue to do so with a Republican congress.

He's taking care of his base.

But he WILL campaign to us and tell us a lot of pretty words and phrases. It'll SOUND great.

It just isn't real.

This isn't 'indy-pendant underground'. I'm not a DLC or blue dog either, so I'm with you there RR. But let's just crush the insane treasonous nazi billionaires' civil-war-fomenting party first, then after that we can pound the Dems we put in with lobbying and citizen activism. Even FDR had to be prodded a lot by Dem constituents. There's plenty of great critical Dems posting here, you aren't getting lockstep see-no-evil propaganda.
Even if you go 3rd party for someone who you feel better represents your Democratic issues, you'll find registered Dems working on those issues alongside you. You won't find any repugs, though. Don't resign, reframe the reply, Rowdy. No Democrat here wants to lose a committed Democrat.

We've lost Pennsylvania. 39% is miserable. Add on the enthusiasm factor for the GOP fanatics out there plus the cash influx from the corporations and a dose of rigged voting machines and his opponent is good to go.

39. Mass media and the polls
They are like some big mouthed bully that tries to 'murder mouth' you before a fight. They want to tell you how bad they'll beat you before the first punch is thrown, they want to beat you psychologically before the fight. But if they see they failed to beat you before the fight starts, when they see you can't be buffaloed, you see these sissies back away beating their chests like apes. The fight is over before it starts, and they lost.

You're right about the repug voting machine corporations, but that twisted tweaker Toomey isn't in office yet. The repugs couldn't steal everything they wanted to the last two times around, using those same electronic machines. We still have 2 months to turn registered voters into definite voters. Mobilizing them is the equivalent of making the 'murder mouthing' bully back down.

I do not hink that the bills that we were passed did enough. I think that the congress and WH followed the line of least resistance and passed half hearted reforms. And, health care should have not come first. The economy should have come first.
Maybe they can do better.

And, I do not want gridlock. I do not want any of the games that the GOP will play. They are not adults.
