Please sign the petition @ http://WhenTheSaints.org

It's been two years since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast region, and still there are tens of thousands of families without homes. 30,000 families are scattered across the country in FEMA apartments, 13,000 are in trailers, and hardly any of the 77,000 rental units destroyed in New Orleans have been rebuilt. Support the Gulf Coast Recovery Bill of 2007 by signing the petition at WhenTheSaints.org.

I'm especially pissed off this morning about the pretty pictures that MSNBC posted showing us how great the rebuilding has been going so far. Even tho in the majority of the pictures that they show, the actual structures that disappeared were never rebuilt, but it looks cleaner with pretty green all around.

Does anyone know of some organizations that are helping aid Katrina victims as far as money goes?

I am in a position at my college to do fund raisers and would love to help as much as I can muster. The last fund raiser we did we raised about $500 for Darfur Refugees. I know a lot of the fund raising sites send only a fraction of the money to the families...any suggestions?

6. Thank you, PianoBlack, and welcome to DU!

A couple of links to excellent organizations:

Thank you for caring enough to do a fundraiser for Katrina survivors, and thank you so very much for your efforts on behalf of Darfur refugees! We need more young people like you!

8. Well thank ya.
My father (republican...) and my mother (Democrat) did me a huge favor my teaching me the importance of history and politics. My house was always very political...probably part of the reason they divorced...but all the same. I try to get other students politically motivated as much as I can. Sometimes I feel like I'm dragging them...but it's good for them. :)

5. This is Americas greatest shame.
The last I heard was that 'Habitats for Humanity' was the only charity that just cut through all the BS and actually helped to build houses. I don't know if that's still true but have donated twice. Shameful, embarrassing, I don't know what the right word for this is.

9. I don't understand why there is no outrage over this.
When I think of all the fuss over Don Imus's crude remark, and I don't condone what he said, but compared to this? Why are people so complacent about such a horrific tragedy and the people it still effects.

Was just reading Chris Rose's book "1 Dead in Attic" the other night. I really recommend it to anyone who's not read it yet. :hi:
