I didn't think of that, but you are probably right, the 'no' got into that campaign. I am not saying drugs are good, and think many policies that control their distribution and consumption are good.

But it is possible that policy had nothing to do with drugs.

Side note, I think Nancy Reagan had the best intents when doing that campaign, and agree that drugs are not the best choice. And her campaign was about education so does not fit the 'no' paradigm.

I just find the correlation with the 'no' interesting. And hope that does not offends Nancy Reagan, since her actions would probably be more good then bad in that campaign.

2. The drug war
is one area of wasted resources that we can do without. It's a complete waste. The legal status of these drugs causes more harm than the actual drugs. Not that the drugs are not harmful but the money would be better spent on treatment, education and intervention.

Most Americans already have access to illegal drugs yet chose to avoid them. Why would someone conclude that legalizing drugs would increase their use? It is not a valid conclusion.

3. Economic Explanation
Guys, when crap get serious, Americans get buzzed, high, etc. look at The Great Depression & Prohibition.

I have an idea on what to do, just hear me out:

The Feds tax the sh*t out of Beer, Cigarette, etc legalized drug companies
States who make marijuana legal do the same (I don't do pot, I think that should be a state issue though)

FDR did the same thing right after Prohibition, and it helped a lot.
