Christine O’Donnell In Oct. 1999: ‘I Dabbled Into Witchcraft’
September 18th, 2010 at 1:31 AM by Faiz Shakir

Before she stole the hearts of tea party activists, Delaware GOP Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell was best known for her regular and bizarre punditry on 22 different episodes of Politically Incorrect. The host of that show, Bill Maher, now has an HBO show called Real Time.

Last night, Real Time aired its first show of the current season. Maher began by mocking O’Donnell, calling her “an uemployed, anti-masturbation activist and a close friend of mine.” “I created her,” Maher told the audience, turning to the camera and stating, “You owe me Christine O’Donnell.” Maher said that he has great fondness for O’Donnell, adding, “She does not have a mean bone in her body, or any other bone in her body.”

Later in the show, Maher played a previously-unaired Oct. 29, 1999 clip of O’Donnell on Politically Incorrect, in which O’Donnell said she once “practiced witchcraft”:

O’DONNELL: I dabbled into witchcraft — I never joined a coven. But I did, I did. … I dabbled into witchcraft. I hung around people who were doing these things. I’m not making this stuff up. I know what they told me they do. <...>

One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic alter, and I didn’t know it. I mean, there’s little blood there and stuff like that. … We went to a movie and then had a midnight picnic on a satanic alter.

Watch it:

Maher joked that he’s going to show a fresh clip of O’Donnell every week on his show until O’Donnell agrees to appear again on his show. “I’m just saying, Christine, it’s like a hostage crisis,” he said, “every week you don’t show up, I’m going to throw another body out.”

1. "One of my first dates with a witch was on a satanic altar"
Does that mean what I think it means?

2. ...that she may be the ONLY candidate for the US Senate who actually
was posessed by Satan?
(Well, maybe not the ONLY one, but she at least admits it...)

5. Actually you might have that backwards
Perhaps there was hope that we actually had a Senator that was not possessed by Satan. Sadly, though, this pretty much eliminates that hope. But, hey, at least we can save time theorizing about this one. :)

There is absolutely no way that was not known of by Republican establishment before the primary.

Her winning, had to be wanted by Republicans if that clip is real.

Simply put, there is no way that clip exist, and it did not come out in any of her other runs, unless it is part of a bigger action.

I still think that is the 'green' candidate the republicans 'pulled off the street' to run and hurt other groups.

I understand it, it is setting up a no win situation by association. If you support her they attach that terrible comment to you, if you do not support her then you have to go against her better views she talks about. Just tested that.

That is the intent. If she wins, the tea party gets called terrible things, breaking off Catholics and some other groups that are already a bit skeptical of protestants. Hurting the right in religious sections.

If she loses then the Christian right religious types are blamed for being in politics.

6. I don't think this will matter one bit to the people who will
vote for her. It will probably help her. I know a lot of right-wing religious people - some fundies, some not. Almost every single one of them has one thing in common. A past that THEY consider shady. They may have done lots of drugs, gotten pregnant out of wedlock, joined a coven, killed their grandmother and hid the body, whatever. They ALL have another thing in common. They've been saved by the bright red blood of Jebbus. That's all that matters to them. Nothing they did before (or after) matters. It's their badge of honor.

Eggzactly!

The more depraved the sinner, the better the campfire conversion story.

I can see it now "Al Franken was on a comedy show for years and they didn't do this to him. It must be sexism..."

28. They WANT people who subscribe to crazy. Their job is to do what
their Corporate master's want. If they do that faithfully, the rest is forgiven.

9. Anybody familiar with witchcraft have anything to say about her claims?
I mean, are they even possible? A satanic sacrifice...from witches? Sounds like two different groups to me, but I have no idea.

17. Witches do not believe in satan.
Edited on Sat Sep-18-10 09:51 AM by dbonds
To witches the polarity of the universe is projective(male) and receptive(female), not good and evil.

If there was a satanic ritual then she was dating a satanist which is just an perversion/inversion of christianity. Satanist work within the christian cosmology as rebels. This is not related in any way to witchcraft which honors both the male and female god forms of divinity and nature.

On edit: if she was involved with the satanist group then she wouldn't have dabbled in witchcraft, she would have dabbled in satanism.

11. I don't think this means anything
It sounds like she's talking about an experience when she was in high school, which probably contributed to her becoming a Christian. It's no big deal.

Very anti-elitist...

18. Since most fundies don't have a clue that there is any difference between Wiccans and Satanists,
Edited on Sat Sep-18-10 10:44 AM by 1monster
I would disagree unless she painted herself as the "witches'" victim... Except that the Teabaggers wouldn't believe anything bad about anyone they chose to give their support. "She's like me!" said on a YouTube posted last night. "I like her because she's just likem me." God help us all.

on edit: I left a word out that changed the whole meaning of the post.

27. me crazy?
I loath the woman and everything she stands for. But it doesn't seem like she was into witchcraft, just with someone else who was. She can turn this around and say that's why she became such a devout Christian. Would this deter some would-be voters for her? I certainly hope so. But I still feel, imo, that it's not a big deal.

13. I wonder if she has a witchcraft spell that can be used in place of masturbating.
This whole thing with her past involving witchcraft flies in the face of the Teabaggers' beliefs.

She's one of the darlings of the Teabaggers. Palin is her mentor.

Could you imagine if a story about Obama or members of his family engaging in witchcraft came out?

14. O'Donnell is one of the most un-serious candidates to have come along in a LONG time

and this, with a series of self-serving game-playing GOP candidates with no experience to choose from...

just like Sarah Palin, she will get tired of her 'work' after some months and quit. She is simply not a serious candidate who will stick to it because it is her calling. This is mere publicity hunting and the latest hobby for her.

So will O'Donnell "redabble" and barnstorm the state of Delaware on a broom during the week leading up to the election?

21. Stop Dissing Witches and Their Holy Day. Thank the Goddess...
O'Donnell is now a Christian. Whatever she "dabbled" in (and, as said, if it was a satanic alter, it wasn't witchcraft as witches don't believe in Satan), those who practice witchcraft are happy she only did it to ***k some guy rather than because she had any real interest in it. Too bad she didn't go into politics for the same reason.

22. FReepers think witchcraft is just fine, not a problem for her.
They are a scary group over there. They will accept anything from anyone, even this, without questioning. Frightening times. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2591730/posts

I would say they are brainwashed, but that would imply . . .
