I am so glad someone called out that vicious lie about atheism and Hitler that I believe was indeed designed to get attention off of the abuses he was apologizing for. Probably some PR flak told the Pope to make a juicy statement that could dominate the next news cycle and take the attention off of the abuses and the massive protests of his visits.
