6. Thanks. I knew who she was.
Just didn't know Carrey was involved.

The fact that she's not very well known in this part of the world is definitely a product of our media's focus on the west.

15. I didn't know Carrey was involved with anything
but he has a big following, so if he's going in this direction, more power to him. If you're going to have that kind of name recognition, it's good if you use it for some cause you believe in. Most people don't have that option.

In November 2000, just a few days before the dreadful election, I was visiting NYC with 3 of my good friends. One of the places we went was the World Trade Center.

Right away, they told those of us who were wearing sneakers that we couldn't go up to the bar/restaurant, IF we chose to go to the top of the WTC, and pay the fare.

I was wearing sneakers. My BestFemaleFriend and I opted to not go to the top of the World Trade Center, because it seemed way too much more money than it was worth. (yes, that was a dumb decision!)

So, we went to the Sephora cosmetics store, and then we visited the Prescription-store (can't remember the name. We don't have that chain store on the west coast.)
I bought fake eyelashes and my friend bought a 6-pack of TAB soda, excitedly. TAB was so rare! I still have no idea why ANY bland-drug-store would be selling TAB soda, even if it was NYC.

We learned that Gore lost the election during our cab ride to the airport back home. We couldn't believe it, and, we refused to believe it.

17. I appreciate Jim Carrey speaking out on this...I didn't know anything
about her or this particular situation... just like I didn't know anything about Rowanda until movie came. In the early '90's, I was pretty much out of touch. I think when celebrities lend there voices, people pay attention. It may not be "right" but in today's world, it's truer now than ever......

19. Actors are real people
you only know him through the characters he plays. now you have a chance to see a part of the real person. I see nothing wrong with that.

If I had any fame or notoriety, I would use every drop of it to raise awareness and help make the world a better place. It's the lazy ass famous people who just sit back on their fortunes and keep their mouths shut so that they don't offend anyone... THOSE are the people who bother me.

I applaud JC for doing this.

... amendmant rights is all. If important issues can get more focus I encrouage it whole heartedly. Celebs have the spotlight and they can make a world of difference than average joe. We should encourage them every step and email our praise.

28. Well, "Mancow" agrees with you
he was on Fox last night ranting about stupid celebrities. According to him, Carey is a liar who didn't even know who the woman was until five minutes before he did his speech. And Angelina Jolie is a freak -- his words.
Why? Because they speak out on international issues instead of only voicing concern for the troops. Apparently, if you're Mancow, only the troops deserve empathy.
No one else.
Are liberals the only people capable of caring for the troops and other people...simultaneously?

"I was in the unenviable position of being FOR the War and AGAINST the troops. I just don't like those young people."

-Bill Hicks, 1991

We HATE the troops - that's why we keep asking for their safe return. Duh! :eyes: :sarcasm:

30. Good for you Jim
Where is all the concern for democracy and getting rid of tortuous dictatorships from the WH? I thought that they had whittled their reason for invading Iraq down to that? :eyes: Of course the reason is that Burma holds no oil and is situated in the 'wrong' part of the world.

For a quarter of the cost the US could have deployed troops to Burma instead and liberated Aung San Suu Kyi. Clinton as well could have initiated this. There the US WOULD be greeted with flowers and candy, because it wouldn't be shoving our idea of democracy down their throats, it would be RESTORING a democracy already developed. There may be some on the left who disagree with using our armed forces for ANYTHING but defensive actions, but think of the difference in America's standing in the world if it was Burma that was toppled to 'light the torch of freedom', and not the obvious oil and money grab that is the debacle of Iraq.

For that matter if the troops had stayed in Afghanistan together with a more willing international effort, not only might we have caught Bin Laden, (and found out that though he planned and carried out the attacks of 9/11, even he was surprised at how easy it was to pull off, and how the buildings collapsed so demolition-like) but with that kind of troop level in a smaller, simpler country, perhaps real progress could have been made there as well. Its sad to see the poor Afghan people being only used and discarded as the Neo-Cons jumping off point for their real objective in Iraq.

32. Burma has done nothing to the US
Edited on Thu Aug-30-07 11:54 AM by OldTymeDem
Has no links to Al Queda, is no WMD, had nothing to do with 9/11 etc. We shouldnt get involved. If we did, the people most likely would end up worse off under US occupation than under the junta, just like what has happened in Iraq. And we shouldnt force our values on other nations, again look what has happened to Iraq--a big mess

37. Iraq was ruined due to poor execution and because
Edited on Thu Aug-30-07 04:38 PM by rabidchickens
Bush wasn't doing it for "our values" he was doing it for our business interest (and a geniune false idea that Iraq was a threat)

Confronting Burma stronger, obviously not invading, but fighting this regime in other ways in order to continue a global battle against fascism is something I am for.

The Neo-Cons took this fundamental liberal, almost neo-trotskyist idea, molded it to their own ends and misexecuted.

Compare Kosovo, Bosnia with Iraq, hell add South Korea, Germany and Japan to that list, Iraq wasnt a quadmire to being with, Donny R and Bush MADE a mess of it
