evolution "works"!

The endpoint of evolution for primates is not "human". Humans are, just like any other life form in existence right now, one pretty successful DNA spin-off. But even if we were to identify evidence of "micro evolution" amongst our fellow primates, there's no saying that it would be toward a more human-like phenotype, if that wasn't beneficial to that species in their given habitat. Whale evolves from an earlier species that was more adapted to land. The motto of evolution isn't "goal-directed". It's more like "Shit happens."

The best retort I can think of to the "Well, if people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?" would be something along the lines of: "If you are your grandmother's grandkid--why would you have cousins?" It's about the same, not that we exactly evolved from apes, per se, or that they are as near to us as "cousins". Although modern DNA testing can give a good idea of just how related we actually are.

These fundamentalist simpletons simply cannot grasp the time scale involved in evolution, especially when they thing the Earth is 6000 years old, or some shit. Nor do they get that all these different types of primates evolved separately at the same time we just happen to share a common ancestor along that vast time scale. As you pointed out evolution is not directional. It is possible that humans could evolve into a being with much less intelligence than a chimp. Maybe modern life is so un-challenging for some that the intellect in no longer an advantage - Exhibit A: Christine O'Donnell

1st...Christine, Deary, we did not evolve from monkeys. APES (which aren't moneys) and humans (who are a kind of ape) and indeed moneys had a COMMON ANCESTOR, which is not the same thing as "evolving into humans". It means that there was at one time an ape that was neither a human OR a chimp but over a long period of time diverged into the two distinct species. And BTW monkeys ARE now evolving, but into something other than human, and HUMANS ARE EVOLVING into something else even now.

Evolution is not "monkeys evolved into humans". That's not the theory. It merely states that one species can evolve into another, most likely thru natural selection. Period. If you don't know what the theory even is, shut up.

And I'll tell you what is a myth.... of epic proportions, that Christine O'Donnell is qualified to be a Senator. It's a good thing she's not into sex too, because she's not even qualified to be a mother. She's like a highschool "Heather" in a 40 year old body.

I understand your frustration. Explaining evolution is alway a dilemma. The misconception that evolution goal oriented is one of the big hurdles.

Since you bring up the topic of marine mammals I have to ask a question. Why doesn't anyone ever point out that modern pinnipeds look suspiciously like living transitional species? Is there an extensive fossil record of pinniped-like creatures? Just wondering.

I knew some people back in high school who seemed similarly confused by stuff (science, geometry, etc.), but they didn't assume their confusion meant that the confusing thing wasn't TRUE.

O'Donnell seems the epitome of what happens when ignorance is exalted as a virtue.

I meant that she really did seem to be confused how evolution could be real if she couldn't see it happening. She wasn't trying to be stupid or act stupid.... I think she really wonders how so many millions of people can believe in something that can't be seen.
