32. She's ignorant alright!
Shepherd was criticized heavily after the September 18, 2007 broadcast of The View,<1> in which she stated that she didn't "believe in evolution. Period." Co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked her, "Is the world flat?" She first responded, "I don't know" and expanded that she "never thought about it." Shepherd continued that it was more important to her that she thought about how she was "going to feed child." Barbara Walters replied by pointing out, "You can do both." However, Shepherd then went on to quote scripture.<2> Shepherd later referred to her statement as a "brain fart" brought on by nerves, and said that she still isn't sure the earth is round.<3><4>

Similar criticism erupted after the December 4, 2007 broadcast of The View when, during a discussion initiated by Joy Behar about Epicurus, Shepherd attempted to assert that Christians existed in classical Greece, and that the Greeks threw them to the lions. When confronted on this point, she further claimed that "Jesus came first" (before Greeks and Romans) and stated, "I don't think anything predated Christians." to which Joy Behar responded, "The Jews."<5><6>

Shepherd also garnered ridicule after admitting to never voting because she just "never knew the dates or anything"; she stated, "I've never voted for anything in my life."<7><8>

The only obvious dim bulb in that clip is the one still looking for the 'missing link'. Sorry, sufficient transitional forms have been found.

26. I insulate myself by having NO TV.
And I don't go to their websites except by conscious choice.

There is nothing remotely resembling news on the US airwaves and there hasn't been for almost 30 years, so what's the point? For the occasional TV show that I decide to watch I get the DVD - no commercials is wonderful. Yah I could Tivo, but I just can't be bothered.

One of the best decisions I ever made, besides marrying a doctor, is to stop watching TV. I am just much happier and productive.

Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 11:30 AM by Enthusiast
There are in fact transitional fossils in the hominid lineage. It is actually quite complete, or nearly so. And then there is the molecular genetic evidence which removes any doubt. So evolution is about as proven as anything gets in science.

Maybe scientists will quibble about details in human evolution for many years to come, but evolution, as a mechanism for changes to species and for creating new species, will not be disproven.

18. Who's the dumb woman questioning "the missing link"?
She's as stupid as O'Donnell!

EVERY species is a missing link!

"Lucy" is not a chimp OR a human (and old news, fossil-wise)

And even if not a single fossil had been found, the evidence for evolution is solid. The only scientific quibbles are over what runs the show.... natural selection, or something else.... and NOT over whether evolution happened or not.

And she is not "just a human". "A study of the mandibular structure of a number of specimens of Au. Afarensis indicated that Lucy's jaw was rather unlike other hominins, having a more gorilla-like appearance."

It is sad when people can display such ignorance.

23. 'Hot Topics' w/ Two Idiots at the Table? Maybe Call it 'Conversations With Apes'

Joy is right - the Tea Party proves evolution goes backwards as well as forward.

____

And if you want the car to go forward, you put it in 'D' for Democratic and drive this country ahead....
...but if you want to send it heading entirely the wrong way, put it into 'R' for Republican and reverse us back to the stone age

I do think it is ironic that the clowns who say evolution is myth somehow take their own 'myth' without any proof, and put it higher on the totem than actual science and claim faith is more important than facts. Uh... yea - then have faith that ye will get a brain some day.

28. I know, it did look silly.
But, if it prevents people from talking over each other, or one person dominating, then maybe it's not such a bad idea. Not sure if it helps, though. They still interrupt each other a lot.

It's hard to watch shows where everyone interrupts eachother and talks over each other. Hopefully, someone is finally figuring out that audiences don't like it.

36. Interesting at how quickly the conversation was shifted from the
real issue: How competent, maybe even how sane or intelligent, definitely how well qualified for office is Christine O'Donnell? to whether those who criticize her are being nice enough to her. Bill Maher is simply releasing tapes from his show in which Christine O'Donnell revealed herself to be a superficial idiot.

He is doing a service to voters in a way that attracts maximal attention. There is nothing wrong with that. He is not lying about what O'Donnell said. He is not directly criticizing her. Maybe he is laughing at her a bit.

But the interesting thing is that rather than criticizing or talking about O'Donnell's strange ideas and behavior, the participants in this show started criticizing Bill Maher.

That is how the right-wingers change the topic and throw Democrats off balance. We are stupid to fall for it. Somebody should have immediately said "This is not about what Bill Maher is doing. We know him for what he is. This is about who Christine O'Donnell is and what she thinks and about whether she is qualified to represent voters of her state in Congress."

38. As with most people who deny evolution for religious reasons, O'Donnell
thinks the theory of evolution states that humans evolved from monkeys. That is not what the theory states. The theory of evolution states that we share a common ancestor with other primates. (Humans are, in fact, primates. Any dictionary will clear that up.) We did not evolve from monkeys. Very simple.

Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 04:48 PM by AlbertCat
It doesn't even STATE that.

It merely states that species evolve from other species due to natural selection. Period. This predicts that Man evolved from another species possibly shared by other big apes. The genome proves it, and that is supported by the fossil record and other disciplines.

A good theory makes predictions that later turn out to be true.

Evolution is perhaps the BEST theory ever.

Gravity predicted that in a vacuum, a feather would fall at the same rate as a rock...and hit the ground at the same time if released from the same height. They actually did this in the 60's on the moon, and it was true.

Relativity predicted black holes.... and now we can "see" them (due to the bending of light it also predicted). It predicted time would actually slow if something were traveling faster relative to the observer. This has actually been shown, concretely.

Quantum mechanics predicts behaviors of elementary particles that are being confirmed by indirect observation all the time.

ID predicts nothing that has ever been observed.

40. You are correct.
However, the other speaker is also correct based upon the taxonomy science has created to postulate lineage. Of course, the same DNA determines the evolution of all living things on this planet. Therefore, a nearly infinite number of taxa could be developed to assign kinship so long as they accounted for increasing biological complexity. Of course, you might not even need to do that since it is based upon an arbitrary assumption about hierarchy. All of which is, I think, too involved (evolved) for the 'View" or whatever it's called
