MSNBC The Rachel Maddow Show - 30 Sept. 2010: 'It's Called Money Laundering'

DeFazio fights faceless power money. Rachel exposes right-wing front group 'Concerned Taxpayers for America.'

MADDOW: "There aren't really any..." Concerned Taxpayers for America. Their website does not come up in a Google search.

"We don't get to know who's behind this stuff."

"It's called money laundering."

"To take over Congress, there is no ceiling on what you can spend..."

"You don't stand a chance."

24. "you're not going to buy the United States of America and Congress for your petty little purposes."
- Democratic Congressman Pete DeFazio

I second that!!

Defiance. If these giants try to take over, they won't get head-to-head contests with us. They're going to get guerrilla warfare. The giants are going down and the rich will be torn from their pedestal, like it has happened time after time after time.

When will these stupid rich people learn that they are not the source of wealth. They are leaches on the backs of labor. If you want capital, be prepared to be active with it or you will be despised.

4. Thank you Justices Roberts, Thomas, Scalia, et al for your Citizens United ruling.
DeFazio's case will be just the tip of the iceberg when it's all said and done this election season. And it will get incrementally worse with each ensuing election until this ruling is overturned.

This country has been run by corporate whores in the White House and Congress for years. Now, it's reached the SCOTUS.

7. The Citizen's United ruling was a terrible blow to democracy.
I'm not sure how we even begin to fight the results of it.

8. It's difficult to get a sane picture of what it will look like
when and if the democrats and the Democratic Party decide to fight back against this pathological evil disease of the mind, and you can't blame a disease for being a disease and infecting a healthy body or mind, but once you've learned and know what the disease is and how it works, it would then seem prudent to develop a means to contain it and stop it from spreading. But I'm sure the Republican Party and Supreme Court would argue that that's not the role of government.

But wait a minute, what the fuck am I talking about? The democratic leadership themselves is far too infected with right of center pathological conservatism, that their minds couldn't see though the fog of deception if they wanted too. Where's a Presidential signing statement when you need one..., this country is fucking sick and is being threatened by elements of the status quo who just happen to be filthy rich psychopaths that want nothing more than for elections to fall in their favor, and if the Democratic Party is to sick to understand and doesn't stand in their way, a plague of insanity will engulf the world, and there will be no place to hide, time is running out...

10. You are my hero for the day!
Come on DU, start the chant: Larry! Larry! Larry!

Sorry, couldn't resist. You are dead on with every word, syllable and punctuation mark! Caveat: I'm not a grammar Nazi and will not be criticizing you for twice incorrectly using to/too.

Why does Obama embrace some of Dubya's policies like warrantless wiretaps, extrajudicial detainment, etc., yet stop short on any rule or action that would halt the psycho right wing from taking back the congress?!? Why hasn't the administration gone to court to challenge the corporate takeover of the election process! Why hasn't the President made any executive orders? Why hasn't the Democratically controlled congress enacted a new law that counters the practice in some other way, even as simple as requiring DISCLOSURE of exactly who is funding a commercial or ad?!?

The center-right Republican President we currently have in office seems perfectly happy with corporate control. Too bad we DID NOT ELECT A DEMOCRAT!!!

16. Because it is in the best interest of ......
The president, the congress, and every politician in DC to maintain the status quo. If you really think that the democrats are not interested in the fortunes available for their taken from the corporate AND non-corporate special interest you are blind.

Both parties have massive amounts of money available to them in our current system and both parties are more interested in power and money than they are in the people they are supposed to be representing.

11. my bet is the Koch brothers are behind this - they're laundering hundreds of million$
Edited on Fri Oct-01-10 09:52 AM by wordpix
Long article, I know, but VERY interesting about the Koch brothers (oil barons) and their connections to the tea parties.

Covert Operations
The billionaire brothers who are waging a war against Obama

by Jane Mayer

snip:
After the 1980 election, Charles and David Koch receded from the public arena. But they poured more than a hundred million dollars into dozens of seemingly independent organizations. Tax records indicate that in 2008 the three main Koch family foundations gave money to thirty-four political and policy organizations, three of which they founded, and several of which they direct. The Kochs and their company have given additional millions to political campaigns, advocacy groups, and lobbyists. The family’s subterranean financial role has fuelled suspicion on the left; Lee Fang, of the liberal blog ThinkProgress, has called the Kochs “the billionaires behind the hate.”

Only the Kochs know precisely how much they have spent on politics. Public tax records show that between 1998 and 2008 the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation spent more than forty-eight million dollars. The Claude R. Lambe Charitable Foundation, which is controlled by Charles Koch and his wife, along with two company employees and an accountant, spent more than twenty-eight million. The David H. Koch Charitable Foundation spent more than a hundred and twenty million. Meanwhile, since 1998 Koch Industries has spent more than fifty million dollars on lobbying. Separately, the company’s political-action committee, KochPAC, has donated some eight million dollars to political campaigns, more than eighty per cent of it to Republicans. So far in 2010, Koch Industries leads all other energy companies in political contributions, as it has since 2006. In addition, during the past dozen years the Kochs and other family members have personally spent more than two million dollars on political contributions. In the second quarter of 2010, David Koch was the biggest individual contributor to the Republican Governors Association, with a million-dollar donation. Other gifts by the Kochs may be untraceable; federal tax law permits anonymous personal donations to politically active nonprofit groups.

12. K&R! DeFazio is one of the best reps. we have out there and this piece is a warning that...
...we (as in We, The People) are in a head-to-head battle with corporate interests when it comes to the last thing they'd like to strip away from us: The right to choose our Representative government. People wanted to send Mr. Smith to Washington, but he was outspent 1,000 to 1 because a corporation had more money to throw at an election than all the constituents.

That should chill the shit out of you.

Just about every political conspiracist who's ever bent your ear with tales of corporate political manipulation has now been far-eclipsed by the reality of politics today.

Please watch this video. Pass it along to your friends. Make sure they watch it and understand that this is what the Citizens United ruling is costing our Democracy.

20. Thanks for posting this! Rachel was spot on, and I thank her too!
Peter DeFazio is my Rep, and he is the best Member of Congress I have ever had represent me, especially in terms of how his office assists the people of the 4th district. He is responsive, progressive, ethical and decent. His opponent is a full tilt wacko, now funded by these out of State meddlers with absurd, cookie cutter attack ads filled with smears and falsehoods.
Art Robinson is a stooge, a shill for out of State big business interests. A patsy. A bad neighbor with a venomous campaign.
Peter DeFazio has taken each of his Congressional raises and placed that money into Scholarship funds for displaced workers in the 4th district. Thus far he's given over 300,000 after tax dollars and funded 197 Scholarships for individual Community College students. This would be money the rest of his peers, to my knowledge, keep for themselves.
Anyone on DU who has spare money, send some to Peter DeFazio. He should be showered with money to spend against this creep.
