1. Meg, don't you know you'll get in more trouble for lying than employing an illegal??
I guess not.

3. That's the part she's missing...
...but I'm content to let her keep digging in the name of getting out of the hole.

5. Billionaires for undocumented workers ....classic example of trickle down economics.
Edited on Fri Oct-01-10 10:57 AM by L0oniX
And they say tax breaks for billionaires don't give us jobs ...sheesh

Rich mutha fuckas hire the cheapest labor they can find in spite of having all that money.

6. "...so she followed the law and fired her." She did not then try
to help Nikki become legal and re-employ her. You would think that a billionaire , 1.) could afford to help her, and 2.) would want to keep someone she had already trusted in her home instead of having a stranger come in. Heartless and uncaring sums up our opposition.

7. Repugs always want illegals to work for them for less than minimum wage
because they love a). not spending money, and B). feeling like slave owners of dark skinned people. They just hate the immigrants who work for OTHER people because, well, they're racists too. If they brown person isn't their wage slave then they don't want them around.

The GOP; always selfish, always greedy, always hypocrites.

11. Let's get back to reality here,
She was paying her 23 dollars an hour. That's quite a bit above minimum wage. It makes me cringe when fellow Democrats have to shade the truth to make a point. We have the facts on our side, so let's try and go with that, okay. I had the same problem when Congressman Grayson used a wildly deceptive ad against his opponent. That kind of stuff only hurts us.

12. Supposedly she worked only 15 hours per week,
cleaning a massive house. Who believes she only worked 15 hours per week?

15. Read my Sig. Facts are stubborn things. She paid her 23 per hour
whether that was one or fifteen hours. I'm not a product of the left or right, although my politics lean decidedly left. So if you want some little lockstepper, you've definitely poked the wrong person.

17. Try going out and finding some person to come into your house for years
and years, learn your ways of doing things, and stay with you for less than $20 an hour in an expensive cost-of-living area of the country.

In the 1990's you might have found a $10 an hour worker.

In many areas of the country hiring someone to clean for just four hours a week costs $75 !!!

And that's someone who will keep coming back for months and months, or years and years.

People don't stay with minimum wage jobs cleaning houses if they can find better pay doing the same thing for someone else.

Our local cleaning company charges a MINIMUM of $95 for two hours for 2 people coming in. True, they don't get the full $95 but I asked them if they each made $15 an hour each and they said yes. That's why they will stay with that job instead of leaving at the first chance to work somewhere else for more.

21. So, she is getting 23 per hour and I'm hearing a number
of folks here saying she's making less than minimum wage? How does that make any sense at all? Even you said "less than 20 per hour" I guess some folks are just able to make up whatever they want and work from that point forward. We can have our own opinions about this, (I understand and am okay with that) but we can't have our own set of facts.

I have to be frank. If Gloria Allred wasn't involved, I'd be way more inclined to believe the housekeeper and not Whitman. But the facts are pretty straight forward here. The Housekeeper committed fraud when she lied about her legal status and signed the application. And she committed fraud by using a fraudulent driver's license, and social security card as part of that application process. Exactly how much due diligence is the employer supposed to show in this case?

23. If you divide what she earns ($23 x 15) by the number of hours she actually
works, you'll find she makes $345 per week. Probably wasn't being paid for travel time for chauffeuring kids around. Probably had gaps between running errands when she was "off the clock" by the whitman standards. I'm guessing she probably worked closer to 7 hours a day instead of 3. BTW, in temp jobs they can't bring you in for less than 4 hours. Anyone who would travel to and from the shitman* house every day (probably an hour each way) is going to end staying longer than 3 hours.

And if you've seen the whitman "house" you'll know it probably takes 15 hours a week just to walk from one end to another.

*that was an accidental typo, but I'm leaving it because apparently my fingers want to tell the truth!

24. Thats ONLY 345 a week
to clean this mansion:

Plus watch the three kids, etc. YEAH RIGHT! That's at LEAST a 40 hours per week job.

Stop quoting the hourly rate as if it were a magic number. The REAL rate was probably about $8.63 per hour ($345 / 40 hours), putting the housekeeper just over minimum wage for the state.

14. That is reality Darlin'
and I can't believe that you bought her "$23.00 and hour for 15 hours a week" BS. It takes me longer than that to clean my own house every week-and it's less than 2,000 square feet!

16. It takes you MORE than 15 hours to clean your house every week?
Edited on Sun Oct-03-10 09:15 AM by SlimJimmy
You can't be serious. My wife cleans for about 3 to 4 hours on the weekend, then maybe 30 minutes each day and keeps the house sparkling. What are you doing, repainting every week?

just spout off some nonsense, and a personal attack. Who cares which of us cleans the house? It gets done, and it sure as hell doesn't take 15 hours a week to do it.
