The host on C-Span was gracious in the face of such rudeness and racism.

She begins: "I have a question for the colored man."

And it goes downhill from there.

Yeah, she's 90 but so is my mother, and she would never in a million years say anything like that. People can educate themselves and overcome their prejudices....obviously this woman is ignorant.

69. 'twould depend entirely on where she lived her life. And in what company...
..she lived it.

I would allow a 90 year old white South African a hell of a lot more latitude than I would offer a recent graduate of Berkley.

People can indeed educate themselves, but the sad fact is that MOST WILL NOT. If they would, we woudn't be having this discussion, because forums like DU and Free Republic would not exist for us to have it in. We would agree with each other without ever meeting or conversing, and the entirety of physics would come crashing dowm as a result of coordinated action without communication.

6. Actually, it is quite believable.
We know that there are many vile racists out there. The election of a black man to the presidency, while a great achievement, did NOT usher in a post racial society. Far from it, it brought racists out of the woodwork.

35. Let's do the math here...
If she's 90 in 2010, she was born in 1920. Grew up in the '20s and '30s. Young adult in the '40s.
In her 40s during the '60s. So she's had a good 40 years to break the "colored people" habit of speech she grew up with.
If she couldn't do it in that time, she probably wasn't trying.

Also noticed she hopped straight from slavery (ended over 50 years before she was born) to Welfare. Nothing about Jim Crow laws and lynch-mob terrorism. Nothing about white mobs rioting and wrecking communities where blacks were doing relatively well (e.g., Tulsa, 1921).

And, of course, Welfare was "doing something" for "colored people".... but nooooo, she's not a racist. :puke:

...bowling incident. That she hadn't seen England since before WWI didn't matter a whit. Given a reason to revert to her "birthright" she did so.

Chemistry stagnated for many a year because of Dalton.

Whenever you are evaluating another's actions/words, (even when most of a century removed) it best behooves you to do so looking through the eyes of their temporal peers, not your own.

By todays standards the caller was indeed a disgustingly rude old cow. However, by the standards of HER TIME she really was bending over backwards to accomodate an idea which truly was foreign to her upbringing. Yes, she has had many a year to come to terms with change over those years, but realistically, the leopard (man) who changes his spots is not a common thing, just like 50% of ALL people are of BELOW AVERAGE intelligence. Most of us have an oldster or two in the family who speaks of, Jerry, Jap or Gook or Slope when recalling the past. (And our children will disown us for ragging on ragheads.)

The Jesuits have their claim about the first seven years of a boy's life and that IS a close facsimilie of the truth, what we learn in our youth does very strongly colour our behaviour as adults.

If the caller had been nineteen, I woudn't have bothered with a kicking, I'd have gone straight for the headshot, dismissing them as a lost cause, deserving of nothing but composting. A ninety year old who began life with their own personal Beulah I CAN understand asking that question.

Whether or not "a modern lefty's" head can wrap itself aroung the concept, Whites HAVE done an incredible amount of good for Blacks in America. That it was done in the face of a contemperaneous bunch of pasty faced arsewipes is testament to that which was once good of America.

That we/you(r representatives(up to and including your ruddy president)) today give fair consideration to the feelings behind those very same pasty faces arsewipes is a damning testament to what America has become.

71. Something I found..
The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921

* Moniker of "Negro Wall Street" coined by Booker T. Washington.
* 118 living survivors were located and registered by the Commission by the time its mandate expired on Feb. 28, 2001. (A number of others passed away during the course of the 4-year inquiry.) 176 descendents of survivors were also identified.
* There is surviving film footage. ABC News showed two brief clips in one story ca. 1999 -- there's undoubtedly more.
* By the end of 1921, KKK membership in Okla. was reportedly greater than in the rest of USA only six months prior. (source: Chalmers, Hooded Americanism)
* The riot proper lasted about 16 hours. The mob numbered about 2,000 (estimate).
* The toll (partial!):
o Between 100 and 300 dead.
o Entire 35-block Greenwood District essentially levelled.
o 1,200 homes destroyed
o 10,000 left homeless
o Two black newspapers burned to ground: the Tulsa Star and the Oklahoma Sun
o Dunbar Elementary School destroyed
o The district's library burned to the ground
o Six churches destroyed
o Offices of "more than a dozen" dentists, lawyers, doctors, and other professionals destroyed.

58. I bet she was a Democrat in the 40's!
Like the Majority of Americans I bet she LOVED FDR and the New Deal. All this anti-government, anti-tax rhetoric simply didn't exist for most of her life. Uncle Sam was her best friend in 1945!! But when the Democrats began supporting equal rights she became a Republican...like all the other Southern racist Democrats did.

14. Holy smokes
Btw, shortly before the '08 election I went to lunch with a friend and her 90+ year old landlady. We talked about the election and she quietly expressed that she didn't think that at her age she could get used to seeing a black person as president.

I haven't seen her since nor have I asked about her. But I recall saying something to her about her seeing so many new things in her long life. And that when Obama was inaugurated, it would be one more wonderful thing to happen in America that she'll experience and be comfortable with sooner than she could imagine.

Sometimes you have to restrain yourself from verbally slapping the crap out of a person sitting in front of you. I applaud the Wash Journal's host for his composure.

24. how true.
Every brain cell in her limited cranial space has a virtual wall up, us v. them. And for her, it is a zero sum game. Any success for a "colored boy" means some good christian person is now suffering.

Bright lights and constant exposure makes for the best antiseptic for this mentality.

Funny, America's history is filled with this, starting with religious discrimination early on. Puritans were under a death sentence in some colonies. Shakers were illegal, and would be thrown in jail if they crossed a colony's border. The Irish, after the potato famine, were looked at as badly, if not worse, than blacks in the 1950s. Germans, after WWI, Polish, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, after WWII, not to mention the Chinese in the late 1800s, or the Italians at the turn of last century.

27. It was those remarks
... that were offensive to me (the 'what about what 'we' gave 'them' BS?).

My great-aunt, who is also 90, is a very very sweet lady. But she is from the south, grew up on a cotton farm (no slaves, but there was a family who both lived and worked on the farm). Back then, there was no electricity, they grew their own vegitables, chickens for eggs, cured ham in a smokehouse, through the winter, grew their own food, cooked on a wood stove, and they were very poor.

Her mother (My Great grandmother) did laundry in a huge cast iron pot over a fire outside. Life was difficult, and it was a challenge, especially when the womenfolk had to deal with alcoholic farmer husbands (hard workers though they were).

Anyway, later in life, she moved to Memphis, had a successful career, and employed lots of people in the 60s. She lost most of her retirement income when stocks crashed a couple of years ago, and I know she is kind of scared about her finances at this late age.

Today, she is kind, generous, considerate, and a well loved matriarch of the family, and has many friends who care about her.

And yet, she still calls African Americans 'coloreds', I've even heard her say 'Negra' in conversations during my visits to Tennessee.

It was so weird, hearing her say things like that, but it almost seems innocent when you hear her say these words. Mainly because it is never in a disparaging or hateful way, more simply used as a descriptive in conversation.

While I couldn't tolerate anyone in my generation using the N word in a hateful way, with with my Aunt Millie, I just seem to swallow any criticism.

I have to realize she is a product of a southern culture who doesn't even realize what she is saying could be construed as racist, and I feel I just have to give her a pass. She is the last in her generation in our family. A generation that brought us all the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I just have to think to the future, and hope that generations to come eventually erase the racial hatreds that plague the human race, even today.

38. 90 years old - racism has been redifined several times over during her lifetime - she seems
like she is a little behind. The manner in which we speak of race has changed a lot. It varies regionally across the country as well. I would say that in some places in the deep south it is still acceptable to speak in this manner.

This also points up the dramatic differences between what one is unblushingly able to say if one 20 years old vs. a 90 year old. A 20 year old could probably not even fathom using that language (again, perhaps a few regional exceptions).

But the interviewer, who appeared to be in his late 30's - early 40's took the question and simply moved on. I bet he has heard much much worse in his lifetime.

49. It seems as though she created that little speech-question herself and
Edited on Sun Oct-03-10 08:51 AM by peacetalksforall
has probably said it many times and finally got her chance today - when a Black American was hosting to say it on a program like C-Span. She probably has said it to many racist hosts of local or national radio talk shows. I am sure she thinks it is clever.

It is easy to believe she got the racist message early from her parents. Imagine living 85 years with this in your head.

Then imagine all those people who think like her and act out their racism as she did by calling in (and worse) who believe ONLY THEY are going to heaven because they have accepted God/Christ in their hearts and the rest of us haven't, according to their rules.

Imagine, she believes that skin color is a privilege on which to base separation.

I always get to this point and have to ask why the same people who think like she does are the ones who beieve that the U.S. is superior to every other country on the planet.

...every person who ever received Welfare, Food Stamps or free housing was "Colored". :eyes:

C-Span phone-in shows are just a long, sad parade of unfiltered idiocy.

70. she's probably not a hate filled racist...she is just old..
Anyone here who thinks most 90 year old white, black, etc. people aren't even slightly prejudiced are kind of naive.

Sure some 90 year olds aren't prejudiced but they were probably progressive-minded to begin with.

My grandparents are about 90 and they say the same crap. Calling an old lady a bitch ranks right up there too.

Edited on Sun Oct-03-10 01:06 PM by edbermac
Archie at 2:40 mins:

"Now no prejudice intended, but I always check with the Bible on these here things. If God had meant us to be together, he'd have put us together.
But look what he done. He put you in Africa, he put the rest of us in all the white countries."

Sammy's handling of Archie's stupidity is classic.

73. Good God! Why don't "they" talk about what was done FOR them instead
of what was done to "them"! I'm surprised she didn't say darkie.

Yea, let's overlook that little thing called slavery and the Civil Rights movement because the white
man in US politics was ever so WILLING to afford African Americans their civil rights without a fight.

Pathetic hateful woman, and she gets no pass from me b/c of her age.

The gentleman was just that, a gentleman. I doubt that woman recognizes such a thing.
