The genes for willingness to sacrifice oneself for the tribe were passed on because if the sacrifice benefits the tribe, copies of ones own genes get passed on.

make them want to run the show and not sacrifice anything for the good of the tribe!

Also allows them to lie, cheat and steal for their own selfish ends.
