Fruit flies in a bottle with a little molasses on the bottom will breed and flourish until they run out of molasses. Then the entire community dies. Stupid fruit flies!

But wait, isn't that the business plan of the oil companies? And every kind of fishing industry? And isn't that the population plan of the human race?

What's new to me in Dr. Suzuki's analogy is that with exponential growth of bacteria in a test tube, if they double every minute and fill the tube in one hour, then it's only half full at 59 minutes, one quarter full at 58 minutes. At 55 minutes, they'd only have it 3% filled. How hard would it be to raise the alarm with 97% growth potential remaining, and yet only 5 minutes until absolute doom?

And, of course, his ultimate point, that the human race is in the 59th minute, is sobering.
