Left on their own, they sleep in trees. I've got some that prefer to sleep in trees over the coop (I think it's because they can wake up without having to wait for me to open the door.) Along with chicken feed, they will eat your day old bread and leftover noodles, along with bugs in the yard. There are people who choose to be a lot more anal-retentive about their small flocks, but really, there is no need to fuss. Some of my chickens are 6 years old now.
