be prohibited from establishing a religion or prohibiting the free exercise of a religion without a separation of church and state? In fact, the government can legally prohibit the latter if it entails a violation of secular law. Regarding the former, government is inversely obliged to prohibit a religion from supplanting secular government. Hence, the Constitution confers federal authority to limit the political power of religion by permitting its own defense against sectarian encroachment.
