Anderson Cooper schooled Christine O'Donnell on the Constitution Tuesday night.

In a debate earlier in the day, O'Donnell, the GOP candidate for Senate in Delaware, questioned where in the Constitution the separation of church and state appeared.

Cooper, after playing video of O'Donnell's opponent explaining the Establishment Clause in the First Amendment, said that O'Donnell was right that the literal phrase "separation of church and state" does not appear in the Constitution.

"What she got right was the technicality," Cooper said. "What a lot of people think she missed was everything else."

Cooper then called O'Donnell out for not knowing her constitutional amendments, something that he found particularly problematic given that she claims to be a constitutional scholar.

"I'm sure most of us get confused about which amendment is which, I certainly do," Cooper said. "But most of us aren't running for Senate, and most of us don't claim to be constitutional experts, as Christine O'Donnell has certainly come close to doing just that."

NEW LAW IDEA: To run for a public office, you must actually know the Constitution.

NOT just read it, you KNOW it so you can preserve the UNION of the states.

14. My God, what a worthless twerp.
These right-wing buttholes look up to this woman as a potential leader? WTF? Do they have no standards whatsoever? I don't get it. Are they trying to weaken and undermine the nation and its government by putting dipshits into important offices? Why? What gives?

Conservatives, republicans, and right-wingers simply make no sense to me at all. Everything they say is either a lie, factually wrong, or grotesquely un-American. Yet millions of "low-information" (read: stupid) voters will support fools like O'Donnell.

What a country. I wish I could move to Europe.

15. Anderson Cooper meant well and we on DU understand what he was
saying, but his presentation was too intellectual and too subtle for potential O'Donnell voters.

You can't read the Constitution the way fundamentalist Christians read the Bible -- picking out favorite stories or passages and forgetting the rest.

That is what Tea-Baggers are doing. That is what they have been taught to do.

Christine O'Donnell is totally unqualified to serve in the Senate.

A lot of Teabaggers and even some DUers complain that we have too many lawyers in Congress. But a fairly good portion of the Founding Fathers were lawyers -- and for good reason. You not only need to be able to read the text of the law and the Constitution, but you need to read the history and court interpretations of the laws and Constitution.

Lawyers know certain things off the top of their heads, but good research, creative but logical thinking, the ability to express thought and experience in language and, yes, honesty that make a good lawyer really good.

O'Donnell does not understand what law is about, yet she wants to write them, assess them and vote on them. She should be ashamed.

Her campaign is a kind of form of masturbation in that she has created her own world and saying thins that satisfy her without real regard for the impact of what she is saying on others. She lives in a fantasy. Probably feels good to her, but brings no pleasure to anyone else.

18. Absolutely disgusting. Nothing more than a Air-head bitch.
What is even more disgusting is that she has so much support from her fellow fools. It is frightening when the average citizen supporting this nonsense is an ignoramus. Its too bad that our children and grandchildren are going to wakeup and realize that the had the misfortune to having been born on the wrong continent.

25. Cooper softens it by saying she may have meant the "literal phrase"...
However Coons recited what it says in the video and she still didn't get it.
I just want to see how many ignorant people vote for her. I always get a hoot
out of how many people show their own stupidity when they see these mindless
candidates and still vote for them.
Are there no statesmen left in this country ?

Now it makes it more clearer what Michele Obama meant by saying for the first time she's
really proud of her country. When you see the people elect the more intellectual
candidate for president and the change he wants (he lost track on that change
with some of his appointments and the Repub's not helping at all), and then you see
Cristine O'Donnell and you have to be proud of his being elected and the goals he set
for the nation.

Though I'm somewhat disappointed with the President it does make me feel better about
the country just like her.
