2. You mean, BEFORE he switched from Maoist to Republican?
I've always regarded O'Rourke(and his sleazy scumboss Matty Simmonds)as the guys who KILLED the glory that was the National Lampoon.

Before they took it over, it was the magazine that published the "Vietnamese Baby Book". After they got their hooks into it, it bashed gays, women, the Rainbow and the poor(oh, and women a second time).

5. I'm pretty sure Matty Simmons
was right there from the beginning, at least before P J O'Rourke came on board.

6. Not really. Tony Hendra had a big article about the history of the Lampoon
in Vanity Fair a couple years back(around the time of the publication of his book "Father Joe")and he said Simmonds didn't come in until the mid-70's or so. When he did, Simmonds enforced the dictum that the Lampoon should aim its humor at "the kind of guys who read 'Hustler'". The rest pretty much followed logically, and continues in a series of horrible movies that are still made, and go straight-to-video, under the Lampoon name.)

12. Matty didn't say "read" Hustler. Look at, drool over, spank the monkey to. But read? Never.
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 04:51 PM by herbm
Bukowski and Philip K. Dick were about the only thing worth reading in Hustler. Or so I've been told.

13. Maybe it was "SHOPLIIFT Hustler".
Anyway, it was SOMETHING you did with Larry Flynt's rag(and I don't mean his red-white-and-blue diaper).

15. Who had to shoplift? Someone had a goofball uncle in the basement who had a lifetime subscription an
d wore Army surplus. REAL Army surplus. And slept on a cot and drank Rock and Rye from a half quart. Poop. That mighta been me.

Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 05:51 PM by Ken Burch
And I don't think ANY of that would ever have ended up in the plotline of a "Wonder Years" episode.

(btw, I wasn't actually accusing YOU personally of shoplifting.)

21. I stand by my statement.

http://www.heavymetalmagazinefanpage.com/history.html

"Simmons and Mogel were able to help with the Harvard Lampoon's next parody of Time magazine. It was looking to prove successful, so Simmons and Mogel thought it would be a good idea if there was a national version of the Harvard Lampoon magazine. Simmons and Mogel held another meeting on June 1969 with Hoffman, Beard, Kenny, and Jim Rivaldo, and the idea of National Lampoon was born. They got the rights from Harvard Lampoon to use the Lampoon name, and Hoffman, Beard, and Kenny signed on, and contracts were made (although not officially until February 1970). In Fall 1969 the Time parody came out, and it was financially successful."

O'Rourke is bombing.

4. Yes PJ. Actually, shooting convenience store clerks does make more sense...
... than giving another tax cut to people in your tax bracket.

Among the reasons is that your tax cut requires cuts to education and social services, thus producing more convenience store clerk shooters.

The Republican solution is simply a roundabout way to get the kind of stimulus you suggest.

8. PJ O'Rourke IS my enemy
He can singlehandedly make the Bill Maher show unwatchable with his cute little comments. Fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

He's a douchebag and he ain't near as funny as he thinks he is.

9. O'Rourke is David Horowitz with punchlines.
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 04:08 PM by Ken Burch
Basically, he got mugged by a couple of black guys as a young lefty in Baltimore in the very early Seventies(apparently he thought being a supposed radical would get him a free pass from street crime) and he's spent the last thirty years blaming anybody who ever challenged white male hetero dominance of society for it. That's what it's all about with the Peej.

Why he blames gays and women for that is still a mystery.

14. Miller was never as vicious as P.J.
And his swing right was more about opportunism-he saw the 'pugs getting dominance after 9/11 and thought he needed to aim his "jokes" towards the tastes of the rulers.

19. Every time he's on Bill Maher, I want to punch him in the face.
Especially when he starts his horsecrap about "It's not a pizza pie...it's not a zero sum game" as if having money doesn't mean you're more likely to get even more money; as if being poor doesn't mean you're likely to stay poor.

It may not be zero sum, but there are tremendous advantages to starting out with money. The people who have it tend to keep it.

20. The biggest problem with O'Rourke
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 10:28 PM by ProudDad
is that he's not funny!

He thinks he's the right-wing's version of Lenny Bruce...

When he's actually an unfunny Phyllis Diller in drag (apologies to Phyllis Diller -- who's actually funny)...
