With the polls shifting against legalizing marijuana for recreational use, the Yes on Proposition 19 campaign is going to the airwaves with its first television commercial.

A spot featuring former San Jose Police Chief Joseph McNamara begins running in the Los Angeles television market today. He declares that "the war on marijuana has failed" and it is time to legalize pot "to allow police to focus on violent crimes, and put drug cartels out of business."

Proposition 19 strategist Dan Newman said the campaign picked the L.A. market for its initial commercial run "because it's the biggest market with the most swing voters and the largest proportion of election day voters." He said the Yes on 19 effort plans to "ramp up" ad airings in other markets soon.

3. Great! They need to show this every day from now til Nov 2!
19 may be down in the polls, but with an ad like this saturating the markets, there's a chance it'll pass!

5. Busted.
I was arrested in 1968 and in Feb. 1969 I received a 5 five year term for 9 grams of pot (2-3 joints) and served 30 months in prison in the cave-ape Pug State of Maryland.
I had never voted, I had attended one Vietnam Protest and was a full time student at the time.
I live in Northern Californa now, where many Counties have no other income but Pot.
But the Gov. wants marijuana legalized so he can tax it and lessen his taxes.
I'm going to vote against it until they legalize it because people want it.
Not to clean up their financial messes.

11. Actually, Schwarzenegger is against Prop. 19.
He decriminalized it in order to take the wind out of the movement to legalize.

6. the feds have already said they will continue to enforce drug laws,. .
Obama's administration does not seem to think this is a good idea,. as the federal drug enforcement coppers just don't want to loose any part of their power/gravy train. I do hope it passes,. but that will not be the end of the fight,. it needs to be legalized on a national and international level as well. lest we forget in the past 20 years or so the federal government has forced it's war on drugs on counties all over the world by threat and treaty to make a simple flower un-lawful nearly everywhere,. . much needs to be undone before this will be set right.

8. a simple flower un-lawful
I'm all for legalizing pot... but I HATE this sound bite argument!

I would remind you that opium poppies are a "simple flower" (quite beautiful too) that grows like a weed in awful soil. Hemlock is also a simple tree, Mistletoe is a simple vine, and Oleander is another simple flower. The plant world is not benign, but aggressively protects itself with all sorts of dangerous toxins.

12. But to make hemlock trees illegal
means we're going against nature, doesn't it?

Didn't they make this same mistake for prop 8?

shame.
There are other points they could have made in other ads like criminalizing a whole generation of young people with lifetime records for simple possession. And if they have enough to be deemed trafficking, they get thrown in prison with hardened violent offenders which can screw them up forever. (no pun intended)
