"A New York University arts professor might not have eyes on the back of his head, but he's coming pretty close. Wafaa Bilal had a small digital camera implanted in the back of his head, all in the name of art. This video contains graphic content."
Bilal, you may remember is know for his works, 'Dog Or Iraqi,' which used Internet interactivity to give viewers the option of choosing to waterboard a dog named Buddy or an Iraqi, Bilal, himself - he was the one ultimately waterboarded - and 'Night of Bush Capturing: Virtual Jihadi,' a altered version of the commerical 'Quest for Saddam' videogame, in which participants were allowed the ability to play in the identity of a suicide bomber. The later work was banned from RPI campus.
Bilal was arrested as a dissident artist and ultimately fled Saddam's Iraq after organizing other dissidents against the invasion of Kuwait. In 2004 his brother was killed by the U.S. military at a checkpoint in his family's hometown in Iraq.
There is a long and active history of net.art and art performances and digital works exploring the intersection of technology and our bodies, as well as war and ethnicity. I, myself, welcome our new teme overlords.
