Protesters enraged by a Parliament vote to triple university tuition rate caps, attacked a car carrying Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Thursday night.

The demonstrators broke a window and tossed paint on the car, however neither royal family member was injured in the attack.

'We can confirm that their Royal Highnesses' car was attacked by protesters on the way to their engagement at the London Palladium this evening," a spokesman for the prince said. "Their Royal Highnesses are unharmed."

A wire photo of the royal couple, dressed in evening wear, shows startled expressions on their faces as they sit in their Rolls-Royce before exiting for a Royal Variety Performance.

The high-profile incident came late in day of violent protests that left at least 12 officers and 43 demonstrators hurt.

2. "The poster"?
I do have a name, you know! :P

I just posted the attack as a separate OP as I think it deserves it.

Thanks for the K&R, man. :hi:

8. LOL
It's OK man, I was just pulling your chain.

My pleasure, I am seriously sleep deprived what with all this WikiAssange business and now this 8 hour long riot that's had me glued to the screen. It's morning here and I've got to decide between power nap or strong coffee...

13. . . .

Yuppers - I know ya were chain pullin' but I should've at least acknowledged who posted it! hahaha

Oh, and I recommend a power nap: length 60 minutes

(actually I hear 20 good minutes of sleep buys 3 hours of focused awake time)

3. "I say...they're not admiring our splendor a'tall, wouldn't you say, Chahles?"
Edited on Thu Dec-09-10 07:56 PM by pacalo
"Don't these peasants understand it takes lots of their tuition money for us to keep up appearances?"

"You're quite right, Camilla, the thankless riff-raff should be admiring your sparkling emeralds. What is our private glitzy world coming to when we can't parade our obscene wealth amid a sea of admiring, gawking peasants?"

12. Here's some facts for you.
Members of the Royal Family carry out public duties; these individuals receive an annual payment known as a Parliamentary Annuity, the funds being supplied to cover office costs.
These amounts are repaid by The Queen from her private funds.

14. I was focused more on the irony rather than the "facts"; such is the nature of humor.
Their timing in being chauffeured in a Rolls-Royce through a crowd protesting a tuition increase they can't afford is jaw-dropping.

Didn't mean to offend anyone; sorry. :)

6. How many of these protesters voted in their last election? Few I'll bet.
Edited on Thu Dec-09-10 08:21 PM by onehandle
If young people would get off their asses and vote, we would have progressive majorities on both side of the pond.

7. Actually, a lot of them voted for the Lib Dems and that's one of the reasons they're furious
During the election they campaigned that they wouldn't increase tuition fees. Now, led by Clegg, a majority of the Lib Dems have voted for the 300% increase of the fees. One of the biggest U turns in modern British politics.

10. Yeah, but who needs facts...
... when one can just blame the victim via easy fallacy.

11. Clegg gave the election to the Torys, so that alone is a good reason for them to be angry.
He turned out to be all about Clegg.

But only a third of the eligible youth even voted compared to over two thirds of those older.

The disparity is even worse over here.

16. A core component of Clegg's campaign was to woo the students by saying he would never raise the fees
The issue of student financing had been considered one of the flagship policies of the Liberal Democrats with all of the party's MPs, including Nick Clegg, signing the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vote_for_Students_pledge">Vote for Students pledge to oppose any increase in student tuition fees prior to the election.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Clegg#Tuition_Fees

You say only a third of the youth voted. What percentage of youth in Britain go to university?
